Hello all,

I was talking to Allen about this program we are launching, SAM | Shelter Area Meadville, which has grown out of the City of Meadville Homeless Taskforce.

Next steps included filling you all in so here is all the news that is fit to print. Feel free to forward to interested parties.

  • SAM | Shelter Area Meadville is a mutual help voluntary organization that activates community partners to provide our friends in Meadville access to indoor shelter when temperatures are projected to drop to 25 ° Fahrenheit or below (based on the Weather.com Forecasted Low or Feel Like Temperature) between the hours of 8 pm to 8am from November 15th and March 31st.

  • Determination of activation is made daily at Noon.

  • The SAM Coalition consists of members of the housing advocacy community, including CHAPS, Common Roots, Recovery is NWPA, Hayden House, and more. The SAM Coalition will be the governing authority for SAM, and members of the coalition will serve as Partner Leads.

  • SAM activations are facilitated by Partner Leads and at least two (2) Partners (volunteers) on-site for three (3) shifts overnight. Partners are adults that have completed the volunteer orientation process.

  • Erie United Methodist Alliance (EUMA) and Lori Lewis is serving as the administrative organization, lending us liability insurance, experience running similar programming in Erie (Our Neighbors’ Place), and supplies, such as 15 cots to start out, along with all the other required supplies.

  • Family Children & Community Association (FCCA) and Jackie Roberson will serve as the Site for SAM Activations, using their basement space, accessed off of Clinton Court, the alley parallel to Chestnut and Arch, and perpendicular to Liberty and South Main. (Dave Amy from Crawford County Planning is working on a 911 address for this location)

  • We have two (2) trainings scheduled:

  • Attached is a SAM pamphlet and a Save the Date for the upcoming Partner orientations.

This is mostly just FYI so that you are in the know! Also of course you are welcome to direct folks left out there if we are activated!

Comments and suggestions are welcome! Please let me know if there is anything you need from us!

Thanks so much!
