Greetings, from Crash Space!

Another fine week or making and breaking has taken place at your friendly neighbourhood hackerspace!  Allow me to fill you in...

Mark Frauenfelder of MAKE Magazine Visits Crash Space!

Members and the public were invited to come and show off the fruits of their labours for Mark Frauenfelder, the Editor of MAKE Magazine. You can read the details HERE at our blog.  He also signed and modeled our $4200 T-Shirt!  Which reminds me...

We have a $4200 T-Shirt!

Help us support our quest to become a non-profit and purchase our $4200 T-Shirt!  Not only will this shirt get you into those fancy 'no shoes, no shirt, no service' places, but it has actually been signed and worn by Mark Frauenfelder of MAKE magazine and BoingBoing.  This makes it the geek equivalent of a piece of the true cross. Bid on it on eBay here!  Love the classes we teach?  ...the Crafternoons we host?  ...the lectures we broadcast?  Help us help our community and bid!

Nerd Nite Univeristy Teaches Lockpicking @ Crash Space

We had the pleasure of hosting Nerd Nite University instructors Jamie and Eric for a class on lockpicking!  The class was a HUGE success!  We filled our spaces to their utmost capacity with folks of all ages eager to learn the trade.  A 10-year-old girl (the youngest to attend) was the first to successfully open a lock, and cries of "open!" filled the room as those around her quickly followed suit.

The class came with the option to buy a set of picks, rakes, and torque tools, and the instructors supplied practice locks for us to work on.  Luckily for you all, an encore has been demanded, and another class will be happening in the near future.  Stay tuned, and keep your eyes on our calendar!

Android Phones and Cosmic Rays

Levi Simmons will be giving a talk on DECO on Saturday, Oct 15th at 2:45pm at SoCal Code Camp.

The camera in your Android phone can do more than just take pictures.  The underlying sensor -- the CCD -- is also sensitive to radiation that is not in the humanly visible spectrum.  The DECO Android app does not require hardware modification and runs on your device during the night while charging.  Observations are collected and uploaded to a central system for post-processing and analysis.  The DECO technology builds on related technology -- the Distributed Sensor Web (DSW) -- which provides the backend for collecting and analysing vast amounts of  sensor observations from heterogeneous sensor types -- cosmic-rays, weather, earthquakes, radiation, etc.  Read more...

The NowJS Hackathon is Complete!

Ever wondered about Node.js?  What about NowJS?  Come play with our submission here!  Enter a word, get an image.  Now type the word that reminds you the most of the image you see.  If you get the same image again, you win!  The game is scraping Flickr data, so the most recent image tagged with the word you chose will appear.  The goal is to guess the other words tagged to the image.  Get as many friends in the room as you can, and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events:

Thursday, Oct 6th @ 8:00pm: Part 2 of Jonathan Toomim's Neuroscience Lecture on Memory
