Greetings, all!  Welcome to another issue of This Week @ Crash Space!

Our Quest for Non-Profit Status

...is still underway! We're 25% of the way to our $5K goal.  If you'd like to help support us and our mission to infiltrate all of west LA with science and technology, please sign up for one of our classes, or donate us some cold, hard, digital cash via the sidebar on our website!  All proceeds go to our efforts to become a non-profit, which will help us continue to exist as a member-driven community workshop offering affordable hands-on education to our community.

Mindshare

If you're the type of person who loves Crash Space, you're likely the type of person who loves Mindshare as well!  Mindshare, for those of you who have never been, holds monthly workshops, salons and movie screenings that gather ~1,000 Angelenos for evenings of inspiration and interaction.  The main event held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month includes live music, games, art and a curated program of short, eclectic presentations.  Recently, Crash Space began a partnership with Mindshare, and you can now buy tickets to Mindshare and help Crash Space at the same time!  A portion of each ticket purchased through our affiliate link goes to our 501(c)3 quest for non-profit status! As the next event approaches, we'll provide a link to buy your tickets through us! :)

MakerBot Monthly

                                                  So many MaketBots!

MakerBot Monthly is an open workshop held by our Theron Throwbridge.  MakerBot and 3D printing enthusiasts come together to teach, learn, share, and show off their bots.  October's MakerBot monthly was a raging success, with more MakerBots in attendance than we could even fit in one room!  If you're an expert printer, a curious novice, or anything in between, this is the event for you!  But if you'd like to level up before facing the pros, we also have...

MakerBot 101

Theron demos the software side of printing

Like any true maker with a passion, Theron Trowbridge also hosted an introductory class on the MakerBot this past week to make sure all of us frightful n00bs could keep up with the Joneses.  MakerBot 101 is aimed at enthusiasts with no background in 3D printing or the MakerBot, and is the perfect precursor to buying your own Bot.  Keep your eyes on the calendar for the next meeting, because this one fills up fast!

Carlyn and Sean @ DorkBot SoCal!

Sean Bonner and Carlyn Maw, two of the original founders of Crash Space, spoke at DorkBot SoCal in Echo Park this past Sunday.  Sean talked about SafeCast, the project he founded after the March 11th earthquake in Japan.  Carlyn presented Store Front Music 2.0,  the mechanical music machine that many of you may have seen at our Maker Faire 2011 booth.

CNC Milling and Machining Class

Kyle Cothern's course on CNC Milling and Machining is almost at its end.  So far, it's one of the higher quality classes we've had at the space. (And we've had some fantastic classes, so that's really saying something!)  The lectures are detailed and relevant, and much of our class budget went to providing the students with materials to work with alongside the instructor in smaller hands-on sessions.

Chandra Barnett, learning to zero her axis

After learning the basics of CAD and G-Code, going through tutorials on the available machinery, and covering basic safety, we finally got to work on milling our first test part last night! We used wax blocks on our first go, and made tiny ice trays with Burning Man symbols inside. Soon we'll get to make our first real part: Crash Space logo pendant special-made to work with one of Tod Kurt's programmable BlinkMs inside!

The students' first project on the mill: a wax test piece
