Can some one help me with the following. Spreader beams with shoe
type end fittings (not pad eyes) require suspension slings to attach
them to the crane hook. What percentage of the lifting capacity of
the beam is required for these suspension slings assuming the angle of
the main slings above the spreader beam are min 45 deg to the
vertical??

Duncan,

I am not sure what you mean with shoe type end fittings. In general there should be a manual from the manufacturer of the spreader bar coming along with it.

Basicaly there are two types of spreader beams. One with pad eys
where the top slings are shackled to the top of the beam and the
bottom slings are shackled to the bottom. The other type, long slings
are used that go from the hook direct to the load and the beam has
profiled ends which allow the slings to run over them. This type of
beam needs to be supported by smaller slings that need to be able to
carry the dead weight of the beam and need to be of sufficient length
the set the top angle in the main sling. However when the load is
applied there will be a tendency for the main slings to try and push
the beam downwards. This force will be transmitted to the small
suspension slings. What i need to find out is what % of the main load
is transmitted to the small suspension slings?? I have always worked
on a figure of 10% but not sure how or where that number came from.
