Dear Crane Safety Forum,

A member of BSU has requested your assistance – could you kindly
assist?

What levels of training do members provide for their Tower crane
operators and who can provide CITB equivalent operator training in UAE
(Client requirement).

Thank You & Kind Regards,

Elias.

Elias,

Looked in to this subject in details. There are CITB Instructors who
will be able to provide the training at CITB standard.
However they will not be able to issue a CITB certificate over in this
country.

I think the best way forward is to employ the services of a reputable
and experienced CITB registered instructor and get
him over to assess and put in place a training schedule for the
client.

I know a few CITB instructors (actualy employed by CITB) who would
consider delivering such a training if conditions are
right. Let me know if you would like me to contact them.

regards

Shata

Thanks Shata - I will pass your information onto our members.

Please find below the responses I received from BSU members.

RFI #81 “What Levels of Training do you provide for your Tower Crane
Operators & who can provide CITB Equivalent Operator Training in the
UAE?”

RESPONSE #1 - Crane operators (tower, mobile, crawler, gantry, etc)
must have 3rd party competency and training certificate. Crane
operator competency checks and 3rd party certified training (in
several languages) is provided by Eurolink Safety Services - Harry
Wright: 050 624 8829.

RESPONSE #2 - WE use MTI - Terje: 050 657 0460 - Office: 04 883 3508.

RESPONSE #3 - Third party training and certificate by safety team also
medical check up by medical officer.

RESPONSE #4 - We train our tower crane operators in house by our crane
dept. Upon completion we get MTI to do a one day assessment course
where they test the operator. On satisfactory completion of the
assessment, MTI issue him with a certificate of competency which is
valid for 2 years.

RESPONSE #5 - Please see extract from the ADM CoP part 2 section
19.1.2: Crane Driver: It is the responsibility of management to ensure
that the appointed crane driver has been properly trained, is
competent and fully conversant with all aspects of safe crane
operation. In particular, he must be familiar with the controls and
capabilities of the machine that he is to drive. It is recommended
that all crane drivers hold valid Certificates of Training Achievement
issued by a recognised training organisation. Crane drivers should
meet the following requirements:-

1. must be at least 18 years of age and should be sufficiently mature
to undertake the duties involved.
2. possess a valid U.A.E. driving license.
3. be medically fit for the purpose, with particular emphasis on
eyesight, hearing and re¬flexes, and have a head for heights.
(Periodic medical examinations are advised).
4. have an aptitude for judging distance, height, speed and
perspective.
5. be physically capable of operating the controls efficiently without
undue fatigue.
6. trained in the general principles of crane operation and
specifically in the type of machine he is required to operate.
7. trained sufficiently in the mechanics of his machine to be able to
carry out routine maintenance if required by his employer and to
identify and report defects.
8. trained in the hand-signalling system (approved signalling system
is shown at the end of this section).
9. be familiar with the fire appliances fitted to the crane.
