hook block cert

Most mobile cranes come with two or three hook blocks or in some cases
fleet owners will only buy one big block to suit several cranes. The
senario is. A crane pulls on site to do a lift and the normal hook
block is not big enough, the larger block is sent for from the yard.
On arrival and after reeving up the site ask for the crane
certificate. This shows the crane to have been tested using the
smaller block. the question asked by the site is where is the cert
for the crane using the bigger block?

Obviously this is not availably so what do we do now. Do we (a)
retest the crane with the larger block, (b) just test the hook block
to twice its rated capacity, (c) try and obtain the original
manufacturers cert for the block, (d) just do a visual inspection and
issue certificate of thorough examination??

Normally the hook block certificates of the hook blocks which have been
delivered with the crane are part of the crane log which should be with
the crane.
A crane is not always tested and delivered with the largest hook block
so it could be that the crane log does not provide the hook block
certificate if the owner uses a hook block from another unit.
Regarding your question below I would recommend to make sure that the
crane can use the hook block which is available at site in terms of rope
diameter and size. Operating and reeving manual of the crane should
provide this information. E.g. the operating manual of Terex Demag
Cranes list the hook blocks which can be used for the crane. Please find
attached a sample. Furthermore the owner of the crane should have the
hook block certificate at least in his office and should be able to fax
or deliver it to the job site.

Carsten

From a Crane Service Provider Perspective, we move all of our Large Machines around with Special Fabricated Containers that contain all of the Hook Blocks that were purchased with that machine, where ever possible we do not swap hook blocks around as this becomes a logistic and operational nightmare trying to track, if we were at any time to move a hook block to another machine we would only move it to a machine of the same Manufacture, also only when a full study is done as to rope size / sheave size.

Standard practice is to have the crane 3rd Party Inspected & Tested upon completion of rigging, standard practice is for the 3rd Party Testing Company will request to see the original Birth Certificates for the Hook Block / Blocks fitted at that time, without these certificates the inspector should not pass off the machine.

Rigging up of the machine will always be carried out in accordance with the Crane Manufactures Operators Manual, these Manuals clearly show the reeving Diagrams for the relevant Hook Blocks.

This information is based on Mobile Crawler Crane Fleet, from 150te up to and including 1600te Machines
