playing san andreas the other day and I was wondering why there was no add on game like liberty city stories and VCS. San andreas was and still is (by sales anyways) the most popular game out of the entire franchise. Its not like it wouldve taken them very long, they just wouldve needed a couple of new characters and some missions.

Nobody can answer that question I always wanted SAS but R* decides to move on and focuses on the IV era. One of the problems could be that it would be way too huge for the PSP. They wont redo san andreas for the PS3/X360. They may could do this for the PS2 but it would be completely useless.

They most likely planned on it, but the time frame that it would have come out in contradicted their other projects, so they either dropped it or figured it was a money waster. GTAIV would have been pushed back quite a ways if San Andreas Stories had ever come out.

They could still make it since GTA V is barely on the horizon anyway. It would be hard to scale the whole map, but they could eliminate the countryside and just have the bare cities Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas. To travel between you could buy pay for a ticket at the airport. Or if that is also too much they could just have it in Los Santos or something.

When would they get around to it? The PS2 port of VCS was spring 2007 and GTA IV was originally meant for fall 2007 but ended up in spring 2008, followed by various versions of DLC/EFLC and CTW in 2009-2010 and most recently Mac versions of III/VC/SA (content same as PC versions). Counting ports, there's been at least one GTA title released every year since the series began. It's not just a matter of having time to make it but also of not wanting to over-saturate the market.

According to Wikipedia (unverified), VCS sold half as many units as LCS. With new platforms like the iPad needing content that fits the amount of power they have, I don't think the door is closed on a San Andreas Stories, but Rockstar may have better things to do. The original San Andreas is a so much larger and longer game than III or Vice City, a San Andreas Stories might be considered even more redundant, meaning we've already spent two game's worth of time on that map.

I would say it's just too large, but maybe it's just too recent. GTA III by now is a vintage classic in its own right which could explain better why LCS sold so well. Vice City and then San Andreas were more on a par with what could be produced now for the same format, doing a "Story" for them is more like just doing an "Episode". VCS still sold but apparently less? Well it was more like an episode and not much improvement on the original, so doing an SA Story as well probably would have followed the same trend.

So a GTA:SAS would be nice someday, but probably best to wait until GTA:SA is deeper history and more revered as a classic of its time. Then bringing back the location and characters will be much more nostalgic to play and hopefully reap worthwhile sales, making the development worth the time. Is that time now? When will that time be? Who knows.

Probably if they made a SAS with the current graphics it would be very hard to scale and would take up alot of hardrive space. It could be possible they are making a sequel however it probably have around 40-50 missions as a result of high performance graphics. If it came out I would definately get it without a doubt!

i was asking myself all the time since gta vice city stories and liberty city stories were released and because of fans making san andreas stories on their own way , why rockstar (the developers themselves) didn't make gta san andreas stories and released it on PSP and PS2 just like the other 2 gta stories? i heard bcoz the map was too big for PSP devices but they could've at least make the map smaller like reduce the size or numbers of countrysides or remove las venturas or san fierro from the map just like what they did to gta chinatown wars

They might have thought of it. The reason they didn't might be because the story was pretty much finished that's I think the main reason (gta san andreas has a long story, most missions out of any GTA game), another would be that by then they decided to work on GTA IV for the new consoles at the time. (2007-2008)

I get irritated everytime I see somebody wish for a San Andreas prequel when Rockstar North/Leeds clearly had no intention for it. The Introduction does a decent job of exploring the pre-events of SA and that's enough for me. Plus: why would Rockstar invest again into another repeat prequel when they were better off working on their next-gen GTA game back then?

NEVER! San Andreas had the most interesting and diverse map of any GTA, it's a crime how unutilized it is due to the lack of any "stories" or DLC spin offs. You could make a whole game based around the Red County alone, (maybe something Fargo styled?) We should also learn how did Catalina end up living there and what made her want to "rob this county from every stinking cent!" or what made Wu Zi Mu host races there out of all places. Or what's really the deal with the wheelchair by the Fisher's Lagoon.

It's quite obvious as other posters pointed out. Hardware constraints of the PSP and lack of time to dedicate resources to the project. By around August of 2007 they already had GTAIV almost finished and were mostly just bug fixing and optimizing rendering code, indicating that by the time VCS came out they were fully focused on making a then-next gen GTA (GTAIV). There was no benefit to revisiting 6th gen hardware, and even if they were somehow able to ignore the PSP and made SA Stories for the then-new 7th gen consoles it wouldn't have been a worthwhile investment.

The only real reason why the stories games came out so quickly is because Rockstar were able to reuse 90% of the game assets from their sister games GTAIII and GTAVC. And the only reason why the stories games existed in the first place was because Sony shoved a wad of cash in front of R* faces, just like MS did to them with GTAIV DLCs.

But unlike LCS and VCS, a SAS would've required more time to make given the size of the map, and only about 70% of the original assets could've been reused. They didn't have the time to make new assets, port over existing assets, write new code, rewrite old code, create new animations and record new dialogue, etc. etc. when IV was already in full development and was originally planned to come out in late 2007.

To conclude this post, even if Rockstar considered making a SA Stories, and they probably did toss the idea around HQ a few times no doubt, like said earlier in this post - it wasn't worth the investment.

There wasn't really any reason for R* to make a prequel to SA, and as said above, the Introduction video answered pretty much every question the players may have had after finishing the game. I guess there was still Brian Johnson's character or that ever-so-important mechanic who owed Sweet but eh... I can't help but think that a SAS would've just been another SA focusing on gangs and whatnot.

LCS and VCS were already side-projects for the PSP that filled the void after SA, and at that point R* wanted to focus on their next big project: Table Tennis GTA IV. Making a prequel would've meant no innovation and instead a return to the same old engine, the same old map, all that hassle just to tell a story that honestly doesn't need to be told.

I have always wanted one to start in San Fierro in about 1996 or so. With a female protagonist that's works for Woozie. There's a great episode of Adam 12 called "Mary Hong Loves Tommy Chen" that gives me the idea. But I see why the Introduction video takes GTA San Andreas Stories place, because they were too busy with GTA IV.

even if there is a mod for it , it wont be in the same quality with rockstars leeds production, because you know the developers are talented programmers and their numbers are more than just 10 or 20 modders

And which year it would be set? 1990? 1989? 1988? Or maybe 1987, the year of the death of CJ father, Brian Johnson?

I am actually curious to see how R* would go about this if they were to do a SA Stories. I mean I believe in their quote of the many different "universes" they had left the door open for a return for the 3d era. If they were to do so I just wonder what engines they would use, how detailed would the graphics be, and what the differences would be. I am all for this BTW. It would be a bit of a gift to the spirits of GTA's past.
