Hello Larry,
Meeting you and Joe was a welcome breath of fresh air for me. Most of my
core work is with traded sector companies, in order to help them thrive
so they can hire more workers, thus giving individuals jobs to support
themselves and their families. Unfortunately, a small but crucial part
of my work is dealing with elected officials who are a mixed bag of
people who care about their communities, and people who care about
getting reelected.
I took this job in 2014 because I wanted to get back to Oregon and help
my community, and I've had my ups and downs in getting things
accomplished due to the political constraints. What Roots Solutions is
trying to do is much more in line with my values and beliefs than what I
do here at SEDCOR (because of the political restrictions inherent with
the organization's mandate). I sincerely hope to help you as much as
possible in my official role, but I want you to know that I will do
everything I can to help personally, with my time and energy.
With my SEDCOR hat on, I'd say that you should list all the ways that
you can help the local community (whatever your definition is of
"local"), and prioritize by both how much good the individual ways can
help the community, and by how easily they can be implemented for
positive change. Each one of these ways should be as fleshed out as
possible, down to having separate business plans so that they can be
evaluated through objective criteria.
The main reason for going through this exercise is that you can allocate
your time, money, and resources better. Ultimately it will come down to
whether you aim high and fail at ambitious goals, while at least you
trying, or by starting with small victories, and building both momentum
and increasing support for the overall goal of positive change. I'm game
either way, but I would like you and your core group to make those
decisions.
As I said, I will help with whatever you would like to pursue, since all
of your ideas are based on socially-minded entrepreneurship and
sustainability. Having a comprehensive list of everything that you think
you can have an impact on, will help me to at least get some of the
balls rolling and help you gather the necessary support.
I'll be in McMinnville early this afternoon, if you'd like to talk again.

Hello AJ
Thanks for stopping by and your interest in ROOTS activities
After you left me and Joe discussed in more detail the long list of very
positive and paradigm shifting activities and projects we could
implement if we could move beyond our own somewhat insular structure and
recruit others such as local leaders who have already shown a
willingness to 'think outside the box' such as you referred to in Dayton.
There's no limit to the number of problems we all face and I firmly
believe that our small group contains the nucleus of what could be a
healthy 'tool box' containing at least a start to some practical solutions
Let me know if you think there's something our group can do to help you
make positive change a reality
