ENGAGING WITH INEQUALITIES – II

A group exhibition

Opening on 1st December 2018 @7pm
With the première of the documentary Small City Dreaming
by Mukta Naik and Amit Mahanti

Under the umbrella of ”Engaging with inequalities”, the Gurgaon centre of the AFD has been consciously looking at various aspects and forms of exclusions in practice, in all societies and ways of engaging with it from a creative perspective : a common thread that binds everyone together.

We try bringing together literature, music, performance, visual art and academic work closer on the same platform.

Engaging with inequalities - 2 proposes to continue this artistic and creative journey with our second group show of ceramics/photography/paintings/ drawings/sculptures/ calligraphy and film, specially curated by Probir GUPTA .

Participating artists: Arun Kumar HG/ Ela Mukherjee/ Iranna GR/ Manjunath Kamath/ Mudita Bhandari/ Mithu Sen/ Pooja Iranna/ Qamar Dagar/ Sumedh Rajendran/ Vibha Galhotra

On this occasion, the Gurgaon Centre of the AFD takes great pleasure in screening the “première” of a short documentary (approx 30 mins long) - Small City Dreaming. (The film will later be part of the show.)

About the film and the filmmakers:

Small City Dreaming  is a short documentary (approx 30 mins long), about the working lives of young people in small cities in India and Indonesia. It explores the connections between villages and small cities through the work journeys of three characters: Oscar in Kupang, in eastern Indonesia; Bhaagchand in Kishangarh, Rajasthan, India; and Latifah in Semarang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Seeing the small city through their eyes, we learn that even as many young people in small cities remain stuck in dead-end jobs, others use networks and skills learned in the city to become entrepreneurs. The film has been made as part of a collaborative research project by the Centre for Policy Research and JustJobs Network  which seeks to highlight the role of small cities in migration and employment trajectories...

Amit, filmmaker
Amit Mahanti is a filmmaker, cameraperson and editor, who has worked on films and video installations that explore questions of ecological transformation, culture and politics.

Mukta, researcher
Mukta Naik is an architect and urban planner, and a Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi. Her research interests include housing and urban poverty, urban informality, internal migration as well as urban transformations in small cities.
