Subject: Panel Discussion on Rosa Luxemburg, 19th March, 2019 at Constitution Club
To: <
indrani....@gmail.com>
Dear all,
The year 2019 marks a century since the death of Rosa Luxemburg, just 47
years old at the time of her brutal murder.
Public discussion on Rosa Luxemburg's ideas regarding women's
emancipation, imperialism and war, on socialism and capitalism has
however, remained of a limited nature in our own setting. A renewed
interest in some of her economic theories among some scholars in India
exists, albeit confined to a select few.
Observing the centenary year of her death, provides us with an
opportunity to explore and engage with the life and ideas of a complex
and indeed controversial historical figure, about whom it has been said
that she "travels into the twenty-first century like a great messenger
bird, spanning continents, scanning history, to remind us that our
present is not new but a continuation of a long human conflict changing
only in intensity and scope. Her fiery critical intellect and ardent
spirit are as vital for this time as in her own" (Adrienne Rich, 2004)
