Yes, coyotes are not a comfortable cohabitant for humans and our pets. And they are multiplying well all through the hills of the East Bay.
We carry a small airhorn on the trails at all times and have one at the house. We have been advised to have a variety of loud noise makers available to sound off when you see them around. Air horns, Pet Corrector (sounds like 1000 snakes hissing), a few
cans full of spare change that you can’t spend any where these days…… these will discourage coyotes from lingering in our neighborhood. Our dog Luja is a flock guardian with instinct to chase and attack coyotes among other flock predators and you may have
seen her occasionally down near the ravine that drops from Campus to the Labs below as well as the canyon that drops from Parnassas down to the west side of the Labs. We do our best to keep her from this pursuit because it takes a pack of Pyrs or Tatra’s
to run off a pack of coyotes ! But she is something of a deterrent. Still, apologies for her migrations as she will challenge our GPS electric fence from time to time.
The other advice re coyotes and neighborhoods is to not leave food of any kind outside. Like dog or cat food.
