This is a very interesting article where the community of Winter Garden got involved regarding the proposed 7Eleven in their community and as a result the city government was forced to look into it and may take some actions. The Winter Garden's city leaders first take on it was no different than what we were told locally with ours - it is zoned for what it is . . . what's next on the agenda? Nothing further was challenged. The community, rightfully so, challenged these superficial official statements. Good for them. There is also a lesson to be learned here.
This story contrasts sharply with what we had been force fed locally and the resulting product we now find as our neighbor. What I find intriguing is the media is ready and willing to get involved in these grass roots causes. We all want better, safer communities to live, work and play in.
The 7Eleven we got is a result of many buying into statements by some influential persons who said nothing could be done and then began looking the other way. We have already proven that to be a fallacy. We are making solid headway with the folks from 7Eleven and that should serve as validation that we can and do make a difference as a community voice. We can't change what we now own, that's our fault for not getting involved on the front side. Let it be a constant reminder of the positive power of the wants and needs of a community when it stands as one to protect itself.
This is not a call to arms but rather bit of strong coffee (or tea if you prefer) on a Sunday morning to say "Well done". Now, let's stay awake and stay involved.
For those who may not take our local paper, this was in today's (Sunday) paper.
