I went to the Planning Board meeting this morning concerning the rezoning of 2 W. Harvard St. on my block at the corner of Depauw Avenue and Harvard Street. It's been proposed that these buildings from 1920 and 1930 be torn down and be replatted for two new houses. It's my understanding these buildings were the original horse stables for the Orlando Police Department. Does anyone know if that's true and have any historic pictures?  This plot of land was originally part of a larger piece of property, which encompasses the John P. Erricsson House on Princeton Street, which was built in 1879 and is the oldest house in Orlando.

Currently, the stables are serving as apartments. The property sits within the boundaries of the relatively new Lake Ivanhoe Historic District, which ultimately may mean nothing, but preservationists and historians need to be aware. I don't know of any other structure like this in Orlando. Some may not find much aesthetic value in them. And they're probably not in the greatest shape structurally, but it would be a shame for them to disappear without anyone noticing.

Eric,

Do they want to tear them down because they are in disrepair? You said they are apartments; are people living there? Who owns them? the bank?

Andrew,
The apartments are currently occupied, but the current owners want to subdivide the property to build two new homes. My fear was yet another teardown for a Med Rev McMansion, but the architectural firm, Southern Traditions, is designing homes in College Park that would probably be more contextually sensitive to the neighborhood than most developers. My hope is they'll incorporate part of the buildings, reuse some of the materials and preserve the live oak tree canopy.

I know it's touchy to tell people what to do with their own money and property, but I think more thought should be considered for properties that are community assets.

A small dog was found on Colonial Drive by a Volusia County resident. Happy dog, no collar.
