Title: Understanding and projecting wildfires using deep learning
Abstract: Anthropogenic climate change has made wildfires become more frequent and widespread. These fires exert growing catastrophic impacts on ecosystems and human society. Process-based Earth system land models are essential for projecting and understanding wildfires, but are hindered by limited understanding of human-climate-ecosystem controls on fire dynamics, and computationally expensive model parameterizations. Here we introduce our works on predicting/understanding wildfires using machine/deep learning in several wildfire hotspots and over the globe. Techniques including Earth System Modeling, surrogate modeling, interpretable machine/deep learning, and Explainable AI (XAI).
