Guest Speaker: Dr. Fa Li

Title: Understanding and projecting wildfires using deep learning

Abstract: Anthropogenic climate change has made wildfires become more frequent and widespread. These fires exert growing catastrophic impacts on ecosystems and human society. Process-based Earth system land models are essential for projecting and understanding wildfires, but are hindered by limited understanding of human-climate-ecosystem controls on fire dynamics, and computationally expensive model parameterizations. Here we introduce our works on predicting/understanding wildfires using machine/deep learning in several wildfire hotspots and over the globe. Techniques including Earth System Modeling, surrogate modeling, interpretable machine/deep learning, and Explainable AI (XAI).

Short bio: Fa Li is a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL). He will join Stanford by Nov. 2023. He obtained his Ph.D. degree through the joint Ph.D. program between Wuhan University and LBNL. His major is remote sensing and GIS, and he is interested in physics-guided machine learning, causality inference, and Earth system science. He has published fourteen articles on top journals of Earth Science, including five first-authored ones on GCB, Earth’s future, GMD, CEUS, and Neurocomputing.
