Hi all,

EMR training did not cover use of the messaging system very well. Any suggestions on how to use it best?

This is a test.

Good afternoon!

These are some tips on how to maximize your use of your message center.

Set up a default environment for encounter creation
Are you tired of scrolling through a million locations to find your team (i.e. 0024C-FM-****)? There is a way to set a short list of default environments to save you time.
1.) Open your message center
2.) On the top gray bar, select "inbox", then go to "manage preferences"
3.) Go to "Behavior Preferences"
4.) On the left sidebar, hit "message"
5.) Scroll down to "Encounter creation". Pick the sites you most commonly work at. In general, this should be 0024C-FM-(insert your team color here). If you are on green team, it would be 0024C-FM-GREEN.
6.) Done!

How do I make an in-between encounter?
If you want to place orders or communicate with a patient and you want it separate from other patient encounters, you can make an "in-between" encounter through the messaging portal.
1.) Go to message center
2.) Go to the inbox tab, and hit "create a message"
3.) Find the patient you want to message
4.) When you find the patient and a list of their pre-existing encounters shows up, STOP. Do not click an existing encounter. Instead, just hit "ok", and you will make a new in-between encounter.

How do I refill medications easily?
When you get a request for medication refills, you do not always have to go to "launch orders" to re-write the prescription.
1.) Once you have a message opened up, look at the top bar which has buttons including High, Notify, etc.
2.) Default should be message view. Go to Summary View.
3.) Summary view will look similar to your primary care view or provider view. You can find "medication list" under there.
4.) From there, you can directly renew an expired medication, instead of having to reorder it. This also keeps the med list clean!

How do I know if the patient read my message or not?
Sometimes, you have a lab result which you want the patient to know about, but it can be within the next week and not necessarily immediately. You want to send a message but also want to know if they have not read it after a certain period of time, so you can follow-up if they have not read it yet. If so, here is what you can do.
1.) Write your message
2.) Before you send, go to the top bar and click "notify"
3.) Select the parameters on when you want to be notified for the message. You can set it so that if the addresses have read it, you will get a notification, or if they haven't opened it after a certain amount of time, you will get a notification that it has not been opened. Set the parameters and accept, then send the message.
4.) Watch for your notifications near the bottom on the "inbox" tab of the Message Center. You will know when they have read the message or if they have not read it.

If other people have suggestions, please feel free to contribute!
