Ukrainian journalism: the 'fourth' power or service industry?

The freedom of media in our country is constantly set under doubt. We are forgetting about so-called "temniks" (non-official directives from authorities to put the info in media), however the scandals about the tension of power on journalists are regularly firing-on. From one side, a lot of usual people think about journalists as 'betrayers', who are ready to write any article for a certain money, from the other side the memory about murdered journalists is alive. What is journalism? Is it an industry serving the interests of business and power, or it is the 4th power which has essential impact in the life of the country?

On June 7-8 the Young Politician Club organizes its following the 6th meeting, which will be held in Pereyaslav-Kmelnytskyi, a small city of Kyiv oblast. The meeting will focus on the topic "Ukrainian journalism: the 'fourth' power or service industry?".

The meeting will be devoted to the Day of Journalist celebrating in Ukraine on June 6th. The main ide is to discuss the status of relations between journalists, and the power (politicians), to evaluate the level of freedom of speech in Ukraine, the position of society as for the objectiveness of information provided by Ukrainian media, as well as to find the optimal forms of cooperation of authorities-media-society.

The 6th meeting of the Young Politicians Club will gather active persons and leaders of youth organizations and movements, different kind NGOs, political parties, media experts, and experts in the field of youth policy. We are waiting for the guests from the Media trade-union, active actors of journalist investigations and the advocacy campaigns for the honor of journalists, as well as some free journalists are going to share their position to the topic. During the meeting organizers planned the screening of some videos about the activity of well-known journalists.

The meeting will be held in Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv oblast, the participants will be provided by the transfer there and backward.

The Sixth meeting of the Young Politicians Club is organized within the frameworks of the joint initiative of the Center for Political Education and the Regional Bureau of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation to Ukraine and Belarus in partnership with Non-governmental women organization "Nadiya". The main goal of the initiative is to provide a non-formal discussing space for the meeting of leaders and activists of youth civic associations, political parties, scientists, teachers and the active youngsters..

Українська журналістика - четверта влада чи ''обслуговуюча'' галузь?

м. Переяслав-Хмельницький, Київська обл.

Незалежність журналістики в нашій країні постійно ставиться під сумнів, так, ми вже наче забули, що таке "темники", але періодично виникають скандали щодо тиску на медії, журналістів з боку влади. З одного боку багато людей вважають журналістів звичайними "запроданцями", які готові за будь-які гроші написати черговий міф чи легенду, а з іншого боку ще жива пам'ять про зниклих та замордованих журналістів. Так що ж таке, журналістика, це галузь, яка обслуговує інтереси бізнесу та політиків, або це 4 влада, яка має вагомий вплив в державі?

Чергова зустріч дискусійного Клубу молодих політиків відбудеться 7-8 червня 2008 р. в місті Переяслав-Хмельницький на тему "Українська журналістика - четверта влада чи "обслуговуюча" галузь?".

Зустріч відбудеться з нагоди Дня журналіста і має на меті обговорити стан взаємин між журналістами та владою (політиками), оцінити рівень свободи слова в Україні та позицію суспільства щодо неупередженості подання інформації українськими ЗМІ, а також визначити оптимальні форми співпраці влади-ЗМІ-суспільства.

Участь у VІ зустрічі Клубу візьмуть активісти та лідери молодіжних громадських організацій, політичних партій, експерти з медій, молодіжної політики. Серед запрошених гостей будуть представники профспілки журналістів, активісти журналістських ініціатив та кампаній з захисту честі журналістів, незалежні журналісти. Передбачається показ відеострічок про діяльність відомих журналістів.

Зустріч відбудеться у виїзному форматі у м. Переяслав-Хмельницький Київської області.

Шоста зустріч Клубу молодих політиків організовується в межах спільного проекту Центру політичної освіти та Представництва Фонду ім. Фрідріха Еберта в Україні та Білорусі у партнерстві з Громадською жіночою організацією "НАДІЯ" і має на меті створення неформальної дискусійної платформи для зустрічей молодіжних лідерів громадських організацій, політичних партій, науковців, освітян та активної молоді.
