Great job on the photos Greg!  The slideshow works well with the action sequences, almost animated.

Pilots,

A veritable Antique Extravaganza!  We had amazingly good weather for flying and displaying gliders and a great turnout (43 signed up). The pilot conference rocked with happy energy and finished with a decorated "40 Year Cake".  Thank you from all of us for your kind words and kudos.

More stories:  Thanks to Tom & Barb Pellett for a generous donation of $20 each to the four pilots who all had 3 landings inside the outer target circle.

Doug Lange pierced his glider with the bamboo "Dollar Grab Pole" and the bill stuck in his sail.  Doug returned the bill which turned out to be a $20 instead of $1.  His good Karma was rewarded later!  Doug also flew 9 flights in his Sun III and was presented a nice hook knife by Ken DeRussy.  Rob Stephens accepted the knife in Doug's behalf.

Mark Arnold came all the way from MN to spend time with family and pilot friends.  He gave me a cast metal sculpture about 40 years ago and we were excited about returning it during the pilot conference.  However, Mark had to leave early with his Winged Man but he wanted you all to know he really enjoyed your company.

Hi David and Mark,

I want to thank you both for spending time talking with me about hang gliding history, and for providing me with materials and photos. It was a fun story to write and I enjoyed learning about the sport.

The story is in the Headlight Herald May 16 issue, and I just put it up online: tillamookheadlightherald.com

I've always been attracted to hang gliding from a distance, and now I am dying to try it. Thanks for the introduction to your sport.

Mary Faith

There is a fantastic front page article in the Tillamook Herald today.

Unfortunately I cannot find the online equivalent on the website.
We'll scan it for private viewing.

Congratulations to David Raybourn, Mark and Brenda Whittwer, Ken De
Russey, and Ron Travoli (and anyone else) for the great event.

Hi Dave and Nancy!

Bonnie and I had a great time with you and Nancy. We felt we were treated like a King and Queen. It was wonderful to spend time with you both and great to know you better. The vacation house you provided was deluxe and the guests were perfect. We both enjoyed Rob and Kathy's company. You both together produced a remarkably successful event and I am very proud to have been invited to participate. It was evident that you spent a great deal of time planning and preparing to make it fun for everyone. It is great to have you involved in promoting our history and wonderful to know that there are now several others that I feel share my enthusiasm for working to preserve our history. Thank you so much for the posters, the shirt, the harness, the bag and other bits you were so generous to donate. I am also very thankful to have received your written history. I have only read a couple of pages but I have already learned a few new bits of history. On the way home I found myself planning an event. Your work has inspired me!

Please do be sure to let Doug Lang know I was disappointed to discover that when I went to give him a special recognition for his 9 flights in his Sun 3 I realized he had left. The hook knife is for that special achievement.

Hi Guys and Gals,
Today was the perfect finish to a perfect weekend as I paddled the beautiful Nestucca River. I did 6&1/3 river miles, according to my GPS, and enjoyed some nice bouncy little rapids along the way. Lots of bird life to be seen and heard and I got some good photos.
Thank you all, husbands and wives, for all you did to make this a great time! I'll always have fond memories of these past few days.
Tomorrow (Tues) I go into the interior of the Klamath River tributary named "Salmon River" and spend two nights at a great little "off the grid" lodge called Otter Bar. There probably aren't many other places in CA that are as remote as this place. I have some good friends there that I haven't seen in a few years. It's one of those places that I really start to miss if I haven't been there in a while.
Thursday I start the rest of the drive home thinking of those happy times we've had these past few days.
Thanks again for everything,
Frank
BTW - After I got off the river I ate lunch in Cloverdale. The young waitress said she was out at Cape Kiwanda watching us fly Saturday.

Thanks Dave for the gathering. What fun on a perfect weather day. Shorts, sun, bare feet in sand, light N/NW wind. Some soaring if you were in the right place with the right glider at the right time. What was with the swell building??? Just another part of Kiwanda that could always educate you if you turn your back to the ocean. (waves licking at parked car tires 3 hours before high tide)
It was like a multi year class reunion. Great to share time with so many names and faces of many decades of flying in Oregon. We all share a passion for flying in one form of another as the years keep rolling on.
