If you look at the geographic model that the mm5 is based on, the gorge looks more like a wide valley.(The 12 km model, which is what the soundings are based on is here: http://www.atmos.washington.edu/mm5rt/domains/oct11.12kmterrain.gif ) I think low altitude gorge winds were never really the mm5's forte. The windsurfing sites do better. By the time you get to 3000 feet the mm5 model is closer to reality.
