Hey Everyone,

Got an email from an individual that was out at Kiwanda and was upset about a male pilot that did a 'touch and go' in a falcon nesting area in the last day or so. After trading a few emails to get the details this was what they described had happened:

"I'm sure it was not done on purpose. But the pilot literally stepped into a nesting area.
I saw him do close multiple very very close flybys and a touch and go on the outer point of cape kiwanda. I know that. Because the entire purpose of me and others, being out there was to sit and photograph them.  The outer west point of the cape Kiwanda is actually a nest, a mating site, and multiple perches.  Also it is mating season. And the pilot scared off the female when he flew to the point....

You guys can't  be doing that to falcon mating sites....especially during mating season which is now."

Just wanted to share this with everyone since the individual seems a little upset, and might be information that is unknown to anyone. Please be sure to be mindful of our flying friends while out at our sites. I know we all love flying with them and I would expect no one was intentionally invading their space.

Hope everyone can get out and fly this weekend! Be safe, have fun, mind the birds ;)

The individual sent me an aerial with flight path and nesting areas so everyone can identify them.

Thanks to Kyle Haston for messaging me to request this information from this person, great idea, thank you!

This is news to me.  Let’s update the site guide to maintain ground clearance unless you are on the dune.  Nesting birds on the cape, etc.

I could be wrong, but I would be rather surprised that the particular outcropping is a nesting area. It may be where falcons and other birds fly to, sit on, but it’s rather low and large waves come up over a great deal of it. The nesting sites would be on the outcropping directly SW of there, seen that used as nesting, but that site?? I think the birders may be confused as far as nesting sites verses a mating site.
As mentioned, I could be wrong, but every year that rock gets smaller and smaller because of the pounding it gets.
I’m all for preservation, and we should avoid the nesting sites, but if we start to avoid anyplace that a bird is flying and sitting they how do we fly at all?
I’m not sure what site this conversation of the birders is happening on, though I think that someone who could have a good dialog with them should open up a conversation so there is an understanding of what is a nesting site and exactly where they are at so we can avoid them. This way instead of just them raising alarms with fish and wildlife and banning area to fly we can make sure all stays open.

Thanks,
Bob Horning

Bob they have nested ( if you can call it that amazing where they will later an egg) on the low corner in the past, any little flat surface seems to work. When they are on eggs we do need to be aware and not spook them off though they seem fairly acclimated to us. People mean  well but birds of prey don't seem very impressed or concerned with the large clumsy flying humans.  But easy to be aware and give them some space when they are nesting
