Sunday, first comp day, was very hot and stable, not great for racing, but many in the race finished anyway.  Today was still hot (100) but less stable; I got to 8700 ft before sinking out past Jacksonville enroute past Ashland.  Tomorrow could be epic, or cancelled, hard to say:

Writing this mostly for anyone who hasn’t gone to Woodrat before; short version is you should go next year in June.

Longer version:
There were about 45 volunteers this year, perhaps 10 from CPC. For noobs like me, “volunteer" means either fluffing wings on launch or driving retrieve. As a volunteer, you get a free ride up the hill in the morning around 9-9:30. If you are going to retrieve, you take off early in the day (before noon) when the conditions are less thermic and windy, then land and get ready to be sent on retrieves. If you are going to fluff wings on launch, you don’t fly until all the competition pilors have left (~2pm). when there is more thermal activity and more valley wind. So you can choose your volunteer job based on your flying preferences (and accompanying challenges). Also as a volunteer you can sit in on pilot meetings and some of the Super Clinic teaching. Of course if you really want to improve your skills you can take the Super Clinic which will run you ~$700.

Most evenings there is a glass off, and Woodrat can be spectacular. From Hunter’s (main LZ) you can catch a ride (~$10) to top. Sunday night was truly amazing. I took off from top launch at 7 and had no interest in landing until 8:30 when the shadows were getting longer. Tons of smooth, boaty air and not too many pilots (maybe 10).

This year the event was held at a place called Well’s Land Vineyard, a great LZ with music, bar, and a nice place to hang out. Some people stayed at a nearby campground, some at a nearby Airbnb, and some (Max) slept on launch at 3,780’ to avoid the heat. All in all it is a great place to fly and enjoy.

David Le signalling C.J. Sturtevant (86yo female pilot) ok to take off.

The link below is for the results of all the various divisions of both races.

Yes indeed. Lots of smiles and air miles.
Nice write-up Chris.

Great final day.  Most pilots made goal.  Many pilots hit 10K.  Really hot in the LZ.
