Sollie was a long drive for two pilots and two cars so Doug J. and I
decided to change plans and meet in Yamhill. Low angle of the sun made
the clouds our enemy at times, long shadows. It was windy and I was
ready to leave and turning around in the bus when the wind shut down.
The cycles were weak and teasing Doug, it would start to pick up and
then a cloud would cover the sun. There was only one cycle that seemed
launchable when Doug pulled up and turned around he was not convinced
and laid it back down. It was lighter and more cross now and Doug
bunched up and let me give it a go. Finding little after launching I
headed over to the tree line and found some small bubbles to play with.
Trying to force it around low over the trees I was heavy on the brakes
and went hands up to stop a spin the wing was now surging as I was aimed
into the tree tops. Needing to turn away to the clearcut there was not
room to wait to swing under the wing and get flying again, I forced
another spin and flew away from the tree tops, whew! A sailplane came by
and schooled me climbing up to base and flying back to North Plains.
Doug was patient and had a nice launch in difficult conditions and was
able to fly a new site. He had a nice approach landing right where I
suggested. I worked light thermal and ridge lift flying for an hour. I
was not working the thermals well and I think better flying might have
escaped the ground and climbed up to base.
Extra credit for finding the sailplane in the photos.
