It's that time of year again (or well past it I suppose) where folks are traveling and I've had some recent enquires for travel insurance info. I thought I'd share the below info that I send out to my clients when we are traveling together internationally.
Also note that most travel insurance providers claim to provide "evacuation insurance", that that in fact is can sometimes be quite limited. Evacuation only kicks in is treatment is not available in the country your injured in, as determined by the local attending physician (back injury treatment in developing countries can be many years behind what it is here). If I want to contradict the local physician and get treatment stateside, that is where another provider such as Medjet Assist comes in. Read that fine print.
It appears Medjet also covers some Stateside transport, with limits.
Cheers,
Kevin
These
links are only suggestions and ones
I've either used or heard good
things about. If you know of any
better... let me know please. I buy a short term policy to both. If
you choose to get the MNUI, make sure to add the "hazardous sports"
rider.
travel evacuation insurance, non medical
http://www.medjetassistance.com/(read below about the true meaning of "evacuation" insurance)
Travel insurance
https://www.mnui.com/quotes.aspAnd last, but not least for some folks:
cancellation insurance, baggage, etc.
http://www.csatravelprotection.com/ To elaboerate, the "Travel insurance" I've used
in the past is the MNUI link above.
I use their "Atlas" series,
and make sure I get the
"hazardous sports" rider. Usually around $100 bucks for a month or so.
https://www.mnui.com/quotes.aspAnother one recommended is Seven Corners. Again, make sure to get the
hazardous sports rider

One thing to know with these policies around their so called "medical
evacuation" coverage is that if you need medical treatment while traveling
and the treatment is deemed available in the country your traveling in
(by
the INS. Co. and the attending physician), then they will not pay
for
evacuation and further treatment out of country. Evacuation is
only
available if the treatment you need is not available in country
and they
need to get you care elsewhere. This brings me to the next
link, if you
feel you need it.
Evacuation
insurance:
these plans are not medical, but evac insurance.
Much more accommodating
then the above. They offer solo or family,
short term or yearly.

The below info is from the first link/site, and seems to be the less priced of the
two (without looking at coverage). Good stuff.

COMPARING SERVICES
MedjetAssist is a membership program, not a health insurance plan or
travel insurance plan. As a membership program, it offers more and better
services.and better value. Unlike the competition, MedjetAssist
provides
members with air medical transportation both worldwide and
domestically.
Our members get to choose if they want to fly to their
home hospital or
any other hospital of their choice. And there are no
additional costs to
worry about and no limits on total air
transportation expenses.
No Medical Necessity
MedjetAssist members are transported without regard to medical necessity.
This means members, as long as they are hospitalized as an inpatient,
can
choose to be transported to another hospital, even if the facility
they
are in is considered adequate. The choice is theirs. It's that
simple!
In contrast, health and travel insurance plans and
platinum card benefits
require that a transfer be medically required.
In other words, as long as
the care at a hospital is deemed adequate,
transferring to another
hospital is not an option.
Home
Hospital
MedjetAssist flies individuals to their home hospital or
hospital of their
choice. The competition generally restricts
transports to the nearest
hospital that provides "appropriate care."
This means individuals are
taken to a hospital the shortest distance
away that has adequate care, but
not necessarily the best
care.
MedjetAssist members, if hospitalized, do not have to
worry about being
transported to a nearby hospital in a foreign country
that has only
adequate medical care. Members choose if they want to fly
home to their
local hospital or hospital of their choice to receive the
very best care
and to be near their family.
No Cost
Limits
MedjetAssist has no limit on the cost of a medical transport.
Many
companies and insurance plans place caps - some as low as $25,000
- on the
total amount available for an air ambulance. But a medical
transport
between Europe and America can run more than $35,000. Middle
East and
South American flights range from $60,000 to $80,000.
Transport from Asia
often exceeds $100,000.
Domestic
Transports
Only MedjetAssist provides air medical transportation within
the United
States as well as abroad. Travel insurance plans and
platinum card
benefits only cover travel in other countries. If a
MedjetAssist member
becomes ill or injured and is hospitalized while
traveling in the U.S. or
abroad, MedjetAssist will take the member to
their home hospital or the
hospital of their choice. In addition, if a
MedjetAssist member is
hospitalized in their hometown hospital and
requires the services that
only a specialty hospital (center of
excellence) can provide, and the
member is too ill or injured to fly
commercially, MedjetAssist will fly
that member to the specialty
hospital, provided it is more than 150 miles
from the member's home
hospital.
