I'm headed to Kauai in a few weeks and I'm hoping to get some air
time. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to fly and/or who to
contact there?

I was just there last week and contacted Glenn myself (really nice
guy). After a nice chat I came to the conclusion that although there
are a few spots you could get up in that air, it's not a great island
for flying. When I was there the wind was all over the place (too
strong) and really hard to predict. The vegetation makes it hard to
find a decent launch anywhere. One place I've eyed the two times I've
been there is just south of Lihue and it looks like you can hike to
the top of the mountain there if you drive by the Hyatt in Poipu and
climb the south east side. I think the mt. is called Mt. Haupu
Seems like it would work if the winds were west or south. I'd ask
Glenn about it and if you do fly, please report, I'd love to hear
where you made it happen.

I'll give Glenn a call and see what I can find out. I'll be there
anyway, so I might as well look it over and see what I come up with,
adding on to your comments, Nick. And I'll post what I find out.
Thanks for the feedback. I missed seeing the contact on Windlines
even though I looked at the web site while being stranded in SFO
because of fog at the moment. I'm trying to get home from a wedding
in SoCal. Tried to fly at Torrey Pines whilst in the area Sunday but
winds were too weak to stay up.

Jon Goldberg and I flew from Kalalau Lookout several years ago; landed at Kalalau Beach. Grand adventure but Very serious. Lots of planning and luck with conditions. Took eight hours to walk out and our drivers had to circumnavigate the island to pick us up.  I agree it's hard to find good flying on Kauai.  Pete
