Thanks, Todd.  This is really great... Exciting things you all have going on up there this year.

Just a quick question-- what is the format of the meeting with the editorial board going to look like?  just curious whether skyping in from TN for all or part of it would be an option...?

thanks!
Courtney

Hi all,

As promised below are the notes from yesterday's meeting.  I have
taken the liberty to merge them in to a more of a proposal format.  We
look forward to hearing folks comments on this proposal and I can
revise and write up a final one.  John:  please advise on the timing
for getting this all to Davydd.  Thanks much all and see you soon.

After discussing some exciting updates from Eva regarding the UN
speaker from the West Bank, whom we are hoping to co-sponsor for a
February 12-19, 2013 visit to Cornell, we turned to brainstorm ideas
for the AR board meeting that is right around the corner.

The discussion was framed around Davydd’s language:
“… namely some broader purposes of the cPARNetwork to meet evolving
needs of students and the action research community.”

Here’s what we came up with:

AR Consultation with cPARN (December 5, 2012, 3-5 pm)

Arguably, “public engagement” is Cornell’s current phrase of the
moment.  We are excited that public engagement was recently a focus of
trustee weekend and by what is happening institutionally with the
creation of the Center for Engaged Learning and Research.  At the same
time we are wary of the University’s tendency toward “Orwellian
double-speak” when it comes to public engagement as was stated by a
cPARN member at a recent campus lecture.

What does the University’s new commitment to public engagement, as
evidenced by its inclusion as one of the University’s seven main
objectives in its 2010-2015 strategic plan, mean for action research
here?  How can cPARN leverage this period of renewed institutional
interest in public engagement to advance its agenda to promote and
support action research here?  cPARN is potentially able to serve as
an organization that can speak ‘truth’ to the public engagement powers
that be and call out "Orwellian double-speak" when we hear it.  How
can we most effectively do this?

With breadth of the AR board’s collective experience in the room, we
are particularly interested in how experiences of board members at
their home institutions can help us deal with the ‘new’ institutional
environment we are facing at Cornell and propose structuring a
consultation around these questions/topics.

Process:
In this vein, we discussed suggesting a co-facilitation model in which
a cPARN member would pair up with an AR board member from another
university to co-facilitate this session.

We also discussed proposing a happy hour to allow cPARN members more
time to individually meet with AR board members to discuss their own
research and projects in a more informal setting, as we are proposing
a more structured facilitation on the above topics for our two-hour
session.  The best possible scenario would be at 5 pm on the 5th,
right after our session.

Planning:
Once the consultation topic is finalized, we discussed the need to
have one more session to plan and decide on the facilitation model.
We also discussed the possibility of reaching out to Richard Kiley for
background on the Engaged Cornell, and how his unit’s three-year
“trial” period is being evaluated with regards to a permanent
endowment to see if it will help us in our planning for this session.

--------------

That’s all I have and we look forward to hearing folks thoughts.

Also I looked up the names of the editorial board for AR so we all had
them and their affiliations.

Heyoh Courtney!

Not too sure about the format but maybe we could try to do a webcasty thing?  It looks like it might be a bunch of break-out sessions though.  We could definitely put you on the table for the cPARN discussion.

Hey, super stoked to have you back soon.  Ethan said you've been chatting about next year!

Woot!
