When: Monday, November 18th, 2012

What Time: 5-7pm
Where: Alternative Library
What: Drafting a proposal for a social justice requirement at Cornell

To all of us in the Cornell community who wish to integrate social justice into our academic experience:

Cornell has recently seen a series of highly visible sexual assaults and bias incidents that have generated conversation and action around omnipresent invisible violence and discrimination. The members of this community have realized that there are deep, far-reaching issues with our campus climate.  Many have recognized the need for moving beyond reactionary forums and short term solutions into implementing effective, lasting measures for involving students, faculty and administration in changing our culture from the ground up.

In light of these recent instances of violence and the demand for concrete structural changes, Assembly 4 Justice (in collaboration with faculty) is pushing for the creation of a university-wide social justice requirement. This requirement would begin the work of educating our community on inequality, the experiences and knowledges of marginalized identities, and the interconnectedness of these issues to everyone. Through developing and fostering this kind of knowledge and awareness, the requirement would engage all involved in creating equity, in our personal lives, on campus, and beyond.

Because a new requirement would apply to all of us, we are invested in as wide participation as possible in its creation. It should be something everyone would want to see at Cornell, and that all would be excited to take. To that end, we are holding a general meeting on Monday, November 18th at 5 PM to draft a proposal for this requirement based on our creativity, ingenuity and our personal investment in creating lasting social change at Cornell.

Please join us for this opportunity to ensure that social justice is embedded within the fabric of our university for years to come. We would love to see you there.

Sincerely,
Assembly 4 Justice
