Neighbors,
As you probably know, we are in the final push to pass a health care
reform bill that will make coverage more affordable, create a public
insurance option which will provide competition to private insurers,
do away with pre-existing conditions clauses, and ensure that
employers either offer all their workers health insurance or pay a
penalty. The next 6 weeks will be crucial to the passage of reform --
Jim Cooper is still on the fence, and needs to hear from all of us in
the 5th district that we expect him to vote FOR reform and not for
protection of the private insurance industry.
To that end, there are several things each of you can do today and in
the next several weeks to let your voices be heard.
1. Do you have a health care story to share? Are you self-employed
and struggle to get affordable coverage on the private market? Do you
run a small business and can’t afford to offer health care coverage to
your workers? Are your health care costs so high that you have to
choose between medical care or paying for basic necessities? Do you
have expensive COBRA coverage that you can’t afford, or are running
out of COBRA benefits? If so, email me back -- your stories are
needed now more than ever! We need to highlight how regular folks in
Tennessee will benefit from reform. If you OR ANYONE YOU KNOW has a
compelling story to share, let me know asap.
2. The House should have the floor vote on their final health care
reform bill in the next couple of weeks. On the days surrounding the
vote, most likely Monday and Tuesday November 9/10, Change That Works
and our coalition partners are planning a massive event at Jim
Cooper's downtown Nashville office to show Cong. Cooper that his
constituents are counting on him to vote YES to reform. We want a
constant stream of people through his office those days, speaking with
his staffers, leaving symbols of their need for care such as empty
pill bottles, you name it. If you've never visited your congressman's
office before, NOW IS THE TIME. It's super easy, the staffers are
really nice, and you'll feel great because you'll have exercised your
right as a citizen. Children are WELCOME! If you're interested, let
me know and I'll get you more info on the exact date and time when we
have it.
3. If nothing else, CALL congress and tell them you support health
care reform. The number is
866-288-1495.
Thank you so much,
--
