Hi Bryan,
Thank you for your interest in the East Colfax BRT project.
While no project of this magnitude can satisfy everyone, the goals of the project are to create a more reliable, sustainable and safe experience for all people who move throughout the corridor. Final design of the project concluded in 2024, and construction is currently underway. However, we wanted to provide some context to why and how decisions were made with regards to the design questions you have raised.
· Can we please stop installing Light poles in the sidewalk or pedestrian access route (PAR)? A recent example looks to have been installed on Colfax at Madison. Seems reasonable for this to be relocated closer to the street away from the front of the business & keeping the sidewalk open to pedestrians. Other examples along Colfax are located at Ogden.
o New light pole and equipment installations have been specifically shifted and placed to meet all design standards and requirements while also avoiding underground utility conflicts. DOTI adheres to PROWAG (Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines), which dictates the alteration of facilities within the public right-of-way to maintain accessibility for use (pedestrian push buttons for crossing) and accessible circulation. The installations at Madison and Ogden meet all PROWAG requirements and conflict clearances.
· Can we please stop installing raised planters along sidewalks? They're going to create a tripping hazard while simultaneously preventing water from draining off the sidewalk into the soil. An example just got installed along Colfax at Adams. Can we please install the nearside curb flush with the sidewalk with the side near the curb raised a little to help retain water runoff.
o The raised planters will have perimeter fencing (approx. 2-ft tall) installed for visual awareness to prevent tripping hazards. Cane detection of the raised planter curb will ensure safety for the visually impaired. The planters have been coordinated closely with the Office of City Forestry to take into account the sidewalk cross slope to promote positive drainage into the stormwater system. The planters are not intended to retain runoff as they will include irrigation.
· We're missing what could be some key bike connections across Colfax with the BRT. Some could be included with no additional infrastructure installed by the BRT Project itself. Examples in our neighborhood include Madison, Fillmore, & Elizabeth. What is the best way to get these routes added so that they're included for future projects?
o The project worked closely with DOTI’s bike planners to incorporate several bikeway connections across Colfax as part of the BRT project. You can reference the bikeway connections that are a part of the BRT project on the 100% Design Project Area Maps of the corridor found under the Project Design, Branding and Public Art section of the project website. You can also review Denver’s 20-year bike plan (Denver Moves: Bikes) for future planned bikeway improvements that includes ArcGIS mapping of the existing and future planned network. We encourage you to reach out to the city’s bike team to discuss your concerns about bikeway plans and connections at bi...@denvergov.org. You can also share specific Denver Moves: Bikes project feedback by emailing denve...@denvergov.org or calling (720) 865-9378.
Thank you,
