Good afternoon, District 10 Community!

My name is Sterling Simms, I serve as Mayor Mike Johnston’s Senior Outreach Manager for Council District 10 in the Mayor’s Office of Community Outreach.

In light of the passage of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) expansion, and in alignment with our 2024 Citywide Goals, Mayor Mike Johnston, in partnership with Councilman Chris Hinds’ Office, is hosting a Community Conversation focusing on the DDA, where neighbors can share their vision for how they want to see DDA funds allocated directly with City leaders. The goal of this effort is to engage with residents on their concerns, and to hear your ideas, experiences, and expectations on how the DDA can help make Downtown Denver a more vibrant, affordable, and safe place for all. We encourage you to please share this information with your respective networks or institution’s distribution lists as we believe that direct and grassroots community feedback is invaluable. RSVP here.

LOCATION CHANGE: Due to a conflict with the event space, we have changed the location of this event from the Ellie Calkins Opera House to the Commons Art Building at 1245 Champa St. Denver, CO, 80204

Thank you for the reminder!
I tried to share with the community the best I could.
- Post to Nextdoor
- Post to BlueSky
I honestly didn't see any other posts. Were there any?

Here are some questions from those unable to attend tonight. Can these be discussed or answered?
  • Vibrant Denver (Resources for vibrant neighborhoods and vibrant Downtown)
    • Will public restroom availability be increased as part of the "resources" for vibrant neighborhoods? Cheesman Park only has 4 toilets in total. This seems insufficient during warmer days. Governor's Park doesn't have any restrooms at all. There also don't appear to be any restrooms along the Cherry Creek Trail. We could also use restrooms at Transit Stations and the intersections of major bus routes, like Colfax & CO Blvd.
    • Will drinking water availability be increased around Denver & in Parks? The Carla Madison Dog Park currently doesn't have running water & neither does City Park or Cheesman Park.
  • Affordable Denver (homelessness, housing, and wraparound services)
    • Will the City acquire more properties to build more affordable housing in Denver? For example, the property recently approved for demolition on Colfax at Franklin could maybe be bought to build low-income or free housing.
    • Our unhoused neighbors are still getting caught up in encampment sweeps. Instead of a "sweep" could we send teams to make contact with each person to get them moved into permanent shelter? Only sweep the encampment once every single person has received an option for housing that works for them.
  • Safe Denver (safe neighborhoods)
    • Drivers are speeding on neighborhood streets with 20mph posted speed limits. When & how can we enforce those 20mph speed limits? Why can't we get 20mph speed limit signs on all Neighborhood Bikeways, like the Garfield St NBW?
    • Sidewalks in Business Improvement Districts are often icy. Can we require the Business Improvement districts to be responsible for clearing the sidewalks along their boundary areas including crosswalks? They could either buy a small plow OR contract with a single company to plow a loop first thing in the morning instead of waiting for businesses to clear the sidewalks when they open later in the day. The crosswalks can also be an issue after a snowfall in the Downtown Denver Partnership BID area.
    • Bike facilities do not seem to connect to one another maintaining the same level of comfort... Here are some examples illustrating my point. The  Champa St bike lane just ends at Speer Blvd with no way-finding to get anywhere. The Blake St PBL doesn't connect to the D4 on 20th St. The 15th St PBL just ends at Larimer with riders being forced to cross diagonally across the street to then have nothing but Sharrows. The car-free section in City Park ends at the MLK Memorial without a connection anywhere. Can we add requirements into the DRMC for DOTI and DPR to adhere to?
    • Bike Parking doesn't seem to have any requirements for installation like shelter from the elements & lighting. Can we add requirements into the DRMC for developers & DOTI to adhere to?
    • Some new sidewalk installations are going in right along busy arterials. Can we either move them farther away from the road or add bollards like along Steele & 1st St in Cherry Creek North? The new shared-use sidewalk along CO Blvd at the City Park Golf Course feels dangerous & we need protection from drivers.

Thank you in advance for answering these questions & addressing these concerns.

Respectfully,
Bryan Wilson

Additional questions from Reddit r/BikeDenver for the Mayor's Office & Councilman Hinds' Office. Please send to their respective contacts for answers.
  1. Denver many cyclists get hurt or die. What you plan to do for more bike lanes with protection, especially in busy areas like Capitol Hill and LoDo, in next year?
  2. Denver growing fast, many people move out. How you make sure bike lanes and safe transport reach poor people, like in Five Points and Westwood? Everyone need safe bike to use.
  3. How much money you put for bike lanes and bike projects from transportation budget? How you make sure money not go to car projects, like more parking or big roads?
  4. Denver want to fight climate change. How you use bike lanes to help reduce pollution and make city cleaner? When bike can help city reach carbon goals?
  5. Denver have RTD buses and trains. How you make bike lanes work with public transport, like in Aurora and Highlands, so people can bike and take bus or train together?
  6. Denver say Vision Zero, no traffic death. How you make sure city reach this goal in 10 years, especially in dangerous places like Colfax and Broadway? How you check progress?
  7. Many people in Denver not sure about bike lanes. What you do to talk with drivers and people who don’t bike, so they understand and support bike lanes for all?
Thank you,
Bryan Wilson
