DOTI Listens, Responds to Community Input on Alameda Lane Repurposing Project Denver – Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is moving forward with plans to improve safety along Alameda Avenue between Franklin and Lincoln streets, making adjustments to a lane repurposing project to address community concerns about congestion, traffic diversion, and access to businesses along the stretch.
DOTI’s existing design to improve safety on Alameda repurposed a travel lane in each direction between Logan and Franklin for dedicated left turn lanes eastbound and westbound at multiple intersections. DOTI will now adjust its design to repurpose a travel lane in the westbound direction only from Pearl St. to Humboldt St., creating a center turn lane to accommodate left turn movements while maintaining two travel lanes eastbound.
Providing left turn lane pockets on this stretch is anticipated to reduce vehicle crashes. Vehicle volumes on Alameda Ave. are lower westbound compared to eastbound, so the potential for congestion and traffic diversion is lower with the lane repurposing in the westbound direction, while the addition of turn lane pockets will increase safety. Providing two travel lanes eastbound will reduce the potential for congestion eastbound and diversion to the side streets.
Plans to improve safety for pedestrians and people who bike/scooter include installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), pedestrian refuge island, and marked crosswalks at Franklin Street; new marked crosswalks at Grant Street; and protected bike lane approaches and green crossing markings at Washington and Emerson streets. Traffic signal upgrades will be made at Pearl and Emerson streets. DOTI will reduce the speed limit from 30 to 25 mph as planned. More info is in the attached FAQ and on DOTI’s website.
The safety improvements at Franklin St. are scheduled first. Adjusted design plans for Alameda are anticipated to be completed in mid-2026, with implementation expected to start in late 2026, wrapping up at the end of 2027.
