Officer of the Month Nominations are chosen by review of daily, weekly and monthly District 2 Command staff notes, highlighting significant officer interactions on calls for service.  During these reviews, and unsolicited, command staff make note of exceptional police work.  At the end of each month command staff decides to select three officer interactions they feel are most worthy of positive recognition. These are the 3 nominations you see each month, being nominated for officer of the month.
All DPD District 2 community members are encouraged to vote! One vote per household please. To vote, reply to this email (christie...@denvergov.org)  with "Nomination A" or "Nomination B" or "Nomination C".  Please vote for only ONE nomination.  All votes must be received by July 31, 2026 - Thank you for participating!

Nomination A: Officer Stephen Lopez
Officer Lopez responded to an unknown nature call at a motel on East Colfax Ave where a female was reported to be a victim of human trafficking. Upon arrival, Officer Lopez met with the victim in her motel room and learned that she was forced from Oklahoma City to Denver by a male who was trafficking her along East Colfax Ave. Officer Lopez received a very detailed description of who the suspect was and the events leading up to the victim being contacted. Recognizing the severity of the incident, Officer Lopez let the victim know she would be getting help and that detectives would be involved. After speaking with the victim, Officer Lopez was able to view social media posts belonging to the suspect. Officer Lopez verified the suspect’s identity and the suspect’s vehicle he had been using to drive the victim around. That information was forward to the assigned detective. The suspect was eventually arrested and charged with Trafficking and Pimping.

Nomination B: Officer Brayan Silva, Officer Jose Diaz and Officer Keyshun Robinson
Officer Silva, Officer Diaz, and Officer Robinson all responded to an auto theft recovery call in the 3500 block of N Downing St. Even though the call had been holding for several hours, the officers still took the call seriously and approached the scene with proper tactics. When officers arrived, they observed the stolen vehicle being loaded onto a tow truck and quickly called an audible on their tactics and surrounded the tow truck. At that point, the suspect ran from the passenger side of the tow truck. All officers engaged in a foot-pursuit and were able to quickly catch up to the suspect. Once the suspect was tackled to the ground, he began resisting with officers and force was used to subdue him. During the struggle, one of the officers suffered a medical emergency requiring transportation to the hospital and the suspect possibly ingested an unknown narcotic requiring him to be transported for medical care as well. The suspect was found to be in possession of numerous financial transactions devices and the Denver DA’s office accepted felony charges on the suspect.

Nomination C: Officer Lisa Garcia, Officer Pat Mulhern and Officer Austin Barela
Officer Garcia, Officer Mulhern and Officer Barela all responded to a call of a male using a large piece of metal to break windows, cause damage to doors and threaten people in the 3300 block of Larimer St. Officer Garcia located the hostile and uncooperative suspect behind a dumpster holding a hammer and stick. At one point while behind the dumpster, the suspect armed himself with a large rock approximately 5-6 inches in diameter. Officer Barela witnessed the suspect’s actions and warned officers on scene of the potentially dangerous weapon. Officer Mulhern and Officer Garcia communicated with each other on less-lethal options. The suspect came out from behind the dumpster and began advancing towards officers. Officer Garcia eventually deployed her Taser, causing the suspect to fall to the ground. Officer Mulhern and Officer Barela then ran to the suspect and were able to quickly arrest him. All three officers did a great job coordinating their efforts and safely arrested the combative suspect after deploying a taser. The suspect was jailed for Felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
