Nomination A: Officer Devon Hueckstaedt
Officer Devon Hueckstaedt was conducting proactive patrol in the East Colfax corridor, an area known for open-air drug markets and frequent criminal activity. While patrolling an alleyway, Officer Hueckstaedt observed an individual running after another person and who appeared to be engaging in narcotics sales. The individual was contacted, identified and a records checked revealed three outstanding warrants from multiple jurisdictions including a felony warrant for auto theft. Officer Hueckstaedt’s ability to identify criminal activity, apprehend wanted individuals without incident, and maintain a strong, professional presence in the East Colfax corridor demonstrates exceptional dedication to public safety.
Nomination B: Officer Joel Stevenson and Officer Zach Parrish
Officer Stevenson and Officer Parrish were conducting proactive patrol near E 17th Ave and N Quebec St when they observed a vehicle driving with a defective headlight. Officer Stevenson and Officer Parrish conducted a traffic stop and upon talking with the driver, saw a knife in plain view on the dashboard of the vehicle. Officer Stevenson and Officer Parrish had the driver exit his vehicle after they discovered the knife. After the driver exited, Officer Stevenson observed a bag of suspected narcotics in plain view on the driver’s seat. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, a variety of narcotics were located along with paraphernalia indicating drug sales and a 9mm handgun. The driver, who agreed to speak with officers, admitted to possessing the narcotics and the handgun, which he knew as unlawful due to him being a convicted felon. Officer Stevenson and Officer Parrish were able to complete a thorough and complete investigation leading to the DA’s office accepting 11 Felony charges for this case.
Nomination C: Officer Bryan Silva
Officer Silva received a Flock notification in the area of E 17th Ave and N Monaco St that was associated with a vehicle wanted for shoplifting out of Denver. Officer Silva began checking the immediate area and observed the vehicle several blocks away. Officer Silva observed the vehicle pull into a near-by parking lot and was able to contact the driver who had already exited his car. After explaining the nature of the stop, Officer Silva noticed the driver was nervous and made several attempts to re-enter the car, including sticking his arm back into an open window to unlock it from the passenger side. Recognizing this strange behavior, Officer Silva began questioning the driver’s actions. The driver explained that he was trying to put bullets back into the car and that there was a firearm in the car. The driver was detained and the vehicle was searched prior to towing. Inside the car, Officer Silva located 2 firearms, one of which had no serial number and considered a “ghost gun”. The vehicle was towed and held for District Five investigations. The driver was jailed for possession of an un-serialized firearm.
