Officer of the Month Nominations are chosen by review of daily, weekly and monthly District 2 Command staff notes, highlighting significant officer interactions on calls for service. During these reviews, and unsolicited, command staff make note of exceptional police work. At the end of each month command staff decides to select three officer interactions they feel are most worthy of positive recognition. These are the 3 nominations you see each month, being nominated for officer of the month.
All DPD District 2 community members are encouraged to vote! One vote per household please. Nomination A: Officer James Adam and Officer Cheryl Smith
Officer Cheryl Smith and Officer James Adam responded to multiple reports of a man causing a disturbance in the area of 29th Street and N. Brighton Boulevard. When the officers arrived on scene, they found a man who appeared to be very distraught. The officers were able to calm him down and learned that, in addition to recently losing his newly obtained photo identification card, he had been struggling with several life challenges. After providing the man with resources to help address some of his difficulties, Officer Smith gave him money for a bus ride, and Officer Adam gifted him a pocket Bible after learning the man had lost his own. Thanks to these officers, the man was in a calmer state of mind and ready to take on the rest of the day when they left the scene.
Nomination B: Officer Haley Peyton
In the month of August, Officer Peyton led two enforcement operations addressing ongoing issues at RTD bus stops located at E Bruce Randolph Boulevard and North Colorado Boulevard. Due to multiple community and RTD complaints regarding persistent noise disturbances and suspected narcotics activity at these locations, Officer Peyton took the initiative to develop a comprehensive plan to mitigate these problems. Officer Peyton oversaw the collaboration of District Two officers and RTD security in issuing citations, conducting warrant checks and completing arrest paperwork. Over 20 individuals were issued citations and 2 were arrested for felony warrants. Following these operations, RTD supervisory staff reached out to express their appreciation for the collaborative efforts and the professionalism demonstrated by all involved.
Nomination C: Officer Devon Hueckstaedt and Officer David Arnold
While conducting a proactive patrol near East Colfax Avenue and North Tamarac Street, Officer Hueckstaedt and Officer Arnold observed an individual commit a traffic violation while operating an electric scooter. When they attempted to contact the subject, he disregarded multiple verbal commands and fled the scene, prompting concerns that he might be armed or carrying narcotics. The officers swiftly located and detained him nearby without further incident. Upon investigation, officers discovered a loaded 9mm handgun and a clear bag containing narcotics discarded beneath a vehicle near the suspect’s scooter. A subsequent search of the individual revealed a substantial amount of cash and additional narcotics concealed within a folded $5 bill. Further inquiry confirmed that the male is a convicted felon currently on probation for narcotics distribution and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Surveillance footage recovered from the area supported the officers’ account of the incident. The male was subsequently charged with possession of a weapon by a previous offender and possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
