What does SYMMETRY in &CELL do or mean?

Hi there, I was wondering if you could tell me that the SYMMETRY section under &CELL does. I know there are options like cubic, tetragonal, none, etc. but I am not quite sure what the symmetry is about and how it changing them out (by changing vectors for example) affects the energy.
