Just thought I'd introduce myself and start a little conversation.
I'm Steve Collins, a freelance IA and social computing advocate from
Canberra, Australia.

A few of us Canberra freelancers are starting to think about setting
up a coworking space here. We plan to have it in the Canberra CBD and
have just started thinking about it - so there's nothing concrete yet.

Here's what we've got in terms of ideas thus far:

* around 80-100 square meters
* in the CBD (as I said)
* 2-4 full-timers with space for a few more

Looking around, rent for this sort of space in the Canberra CBD looks
to be in the AU$500-550/week range, on top of which there's the
ongoing costs such as:

* utilities
* Internet
* cleaning
* things to make it look nice (paint, pictures and the like) plus
desks, chairs, etc. (I'm guessing that will run to around AU$10000)

If you're at all interested in joining the conversation or helping out
on getting something off the ground, please let me know on trib [at]
acidlabs [dot] org.

Thanks!

Steve

Hi Steve,

I'm Krissy - over in Perth. I'm setting up a coworking space in
Fremantle but am at a loss where to start (kind of). Looking forward
to following your progress with it all.

Best of luck,
Krissy

Hey Krissy,

I think there is a space in Perth. I've been trying to get i touch with the woman who has opened it: Bronwen? I think.

Yep that's right... it's Softteq, PerthNorg and MadPilot who've banded together for the Perth coworking space.

Hey Krissy,

Probably the easiest way to get it going is to find a company with a
lot of space and sub-lease it off them. In our situation, there was
already two companies in the office, one left leaving the other
smaller one with the whole office. We were lucky because the place was
already furnished, but if you will be sub-leasing then the main
company in the building will probably already have a lot of general
office stuff (fridge/water cooler etc etc)

I know there is a company that just moved offices to Freo, which might
be of help to you - drop me an email off list and I'll try to dig up
their details for you.

Cheers,

Myles

Hey Myles,

Thanks! Bronwen forwarded the info for the contact who'd recently
moved to Fremantle. I'll be chatting with him this week..

Thanks everyone for your help.

Well seeing our Facebook group has died, I'll post some info here! :-)

Some links of potential locations close in to the city (Braddon/
Turner):

a bit of a squeeze at 40m2!)

I'll try and organise an inspection of this one early next week:

$410 a week (if I did my calculations right)

Oh, and it's right across the road from my work .. gosh, how did that
happen? :-)

I'll see if I can get some more photos too, and will post on the
Coworking Canberra Australia Facebook group

Well that specific office isn't available, but another in the building
was - which Steve and I checked out last week.

Looks promising! Just have to wait for the current tenants to move out
and some issues with the lease sorted (the zoning for the building is
wrong or something; they realised this when a tenant lodged an
application for some minor work).
