I’ve spent the past several hours reading archives of people’s post
and frankly, it’s pretty amazing the depth and scope of themes and
topics that have been covered. It’s great to read (and feel
comfortable jumping into) the conversations especially when you can
continue to have the “I thought I was the only one!” moment.

So (!) that being said, I make no claim at originality (and sorry
ahead of time if this has been discussed recently and I missed it), MY
CHALLENGE, and what I’m hoping you can help with, is focusing the role
of Executive Director into a written job description.

Of course this is a fluid document and will change as the space and
supporting community continues to grow, but, aside from raising
awareness about your space, what have you found to be the center of
your job? What factors have you used (or do you wish you had used) in
distinguishing your role and time spend?

Thanks in advance for your insights/help!

If I had to create the job description I would emphasis friendliness,
a willingness to learn, and general curiousity. My role as an owner/
community manager is mainly focused on creating a culture of openness
and a friendly atmosphere. As the main person that people interact
with for their first week it is important for me to be able to
naturally keep a conversation going, learn about them, and help them
feel welcomed.

Yes, I build awareness of the space through a variety of methods. I
organize events, answer emails, and play handyman at lease once a
week. These are check boxes to cover but creating the culture should
be the fundamental requirement of a community manager. If you already
have members then I would look within to see if anyone could fill that
role.

I think NextSpace has done a fantastic job of finding friendly and
talented people to fill the role of community managers as they grow.
If you want a complete job description then I would check with them to
see what language they use or recruitment method.
