Hey Coworking Peeps!
Wondering how many people will be at SXSW in 2008?
Last year, Chris and Tara arranged a meetup during Barcamp Austin and we had a really nice turnout. This year, our community has grown and our movement has a great deal of strength.
As I mentioned on the coworking blog, back in July, Patrick Tanguay (Station-C - Coworking Montreal - Opening Feb08) and I worked on a SXSW panel submission with the crew from Citizen Space (as well as some input from Eva @ Cubespace and support from Brian Oberkirch as a possible moderator). "Unfortunately", our panel slipped into the standby pile (still respectable) as far as panels, but last week I emailed the conference event coordinator to get a pulse on the status of our submission, and he clued me in to the new "Core Conversations" model that's been added to the SXSW Interactive conference. Not so unfortunate after all!
For those of you familiar with BarCamp (many of you are, since the barcamp movement and the coworking movement have woven themselves into one another...for those who aren't, see barcamp.org ), this trial run of a new format for the SXSW team reads (http://2008.sxsw.com/interactive/programming/core_conversations/) a whole lot like that conversational presentation medium that I know I love, and think is a MUCH better fit for the "sharing" type of presentation I'd like this to end up being!
There's also an opportunity to continue (or start, depending on the timing) anything from the Core Conversations session at BarcampAustinIII, which, I believe, is taking place right around the corner from the conference center.
The session itself is a BIT more general than coworking, as the topic we submitted for general appeal:
Coworking and the Evolution of the Independent Worker
So we have an opportunity to discuss some worker/workplace issues, and why coworking is important for exploring them.
If you're involved in coworking at ANY stage: interested in coworking, a space catalyst, a space owner, or an active coworker...drop me a line. I'd like to get a portion of the coworking wiki actively discussing topics that we should bring up during our session, and use that information to best drive the 1 hour slot that we get.
I DONT know yet which day, or time slot, we'll recieve but as soon as I know, I'll be happy to share.
I'm so excited for SXSW, and hope to meet many of my fellow coworkers there!

festival since the early nineties and was lucky enough to be a
panelist for the first SXSW interactive. I hope y'all will keep
LaunchPad Coworking in the loop (we're opening a coworking space in
Austin later this year). You can let me know directly. I'll help with
housing if I can. And we'd love to get together with other coworkers
during your visit to share a meal and ideas. Also, I'm sure you'll be
busy with SXSW itself, but if you need any pointers on how to get
around, where to eat, and what to do, just let me know.

Sounds awesome. A wiki page would be great to compile a list of things to talk about and who will be there.

on my plate so far is the Ellis Lab seminars (http://

I had been begging Hugh Forrest (event coordinator) to accept your
panel, Alex, so very I'm glad to hear about this other option.
Some San Antonio coworking folks will be driving our 80 miles up the
road as well. The gangs from MediaRich, my new venture Firecat Studio,
Todd O'Neill's DoingMedia are doing a few scheduled coworking sessions
and will be eager to learn and compare notes.

I'll absolutely be there. Alex, if you're looking for participants in the core conversation, I'd be delighted to be a part of it. We're doing a somewhat different model than many of the coworking spots (rentals by the hour and an attached cafe, for starters). The whole LaunchPad Coworking team will be attending SXSWi.
Has anyone done any formal work on a meetup yet? Let me know - I'm glad to help there, too.

SXSWi is Friday-Tuesday, March 7-11. How many of you will be around Thursday nightd? That would certainly be the easiest evening to find a location at this late date.

Ok, I'm in. I get into town Thursday evening and am staying with friends of friends in the south central area. I fly out Monday afternoon. I'm coming alone and don't know anyone in Austin so this should be interesting. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at Hotel San Jose on Friday night.
