I agree.  This would be really useful!

I'm Vanessa, a former member of Indyhall. I do learning things in Cambridge, MA with Harvard, MIT & Peer 2 Peer University, and am working on a research project on intentional communities, motivation and good work.

The scholarly research on coworking, I'm finding, is not as robust as I'd like. Do you folks keep a bookmarked list or repository somewhere of research on coworking when you find it?

If not, I will happily start one and share it all with you :)

Thank you kindly, Vanessa

Hi,
I am preparing to do my phd on the atypical forms of work relations, (or one of the types of these relations, such as: european (CEE?) coworking/ freelancing / even Social-Media)

So I am very anxious to exchange or co-create knowledge, know-how, information, articles or raw data.

No I just make it up as we go..... the whole concept is still a work in progress.

Trends are emerging from battles in the trenches.  such as

A)  The key to coworking is work : The people that want co working want to work flexibly, hence a co working community is typically one with a working and agile job life cycle (new task -> outsource-> recruit-> source -> fulfill/deliver -> get paid ->  start again)

B) Work /life balance : is important to coworkers, but the creche+ is an adjacent story, agility and freedom to pursue intellectual pleasure is the real draw.

C) coworking needs to provide be everything a serviced office provides +an enlightened thinking space -chrome,glass and black finish!

D) A space must inspire. it is White and colour ... it is hope, for a better future through design and engineering excellence.

Hi All,

Two things:

1) I had volunteered to coordinate coworking research for the coworking community a long while back, but never found the time to really invest in (figuring out how to) coordinate something as a community. That said, there is a list of volunteers interested in helping on research on the wiki here (also linked from the home page under the Getting Involved/Volunteer link, which takes you to a few ways to volunteer, including on this research): http://wiki.coworking.com/w/page/46983233/Research. If any one does want to take over coordinating that for the wiki, it would be great if you'd start from there instead of reinventing the wheel (not that there's a complicated wheel to reinvent).

2) I am currently working on a research project with a couple of graduate students (one of them Sam Spurlin who's already on that volunteer list) doing semi-structured interviews with independent workers about their expectations about and the reality of working independently, with a particular focus on psychological costs and benefits and the coping strategies people use (including joining a coworking space). It's all very preliminary now, but we'll share results as we have them and I hope the project will develop in a way that can eventually involve the coworking community as a whole. We may reach out to you for help or participation in the future, depending on how the project develops.

Best,
Will
