I'm new to this list, and very excited to see that what I have been
wanting to do
for the last five years now has a name :-)
After working the SF bay area until 2001, I started traveling
(www.outscape.net)
while writing Java (now mostly Ruby/Rails) code for a living.
But I am getting tired of working alone.
I'd like to find places for coworking in Southeast Asia. In particular,
I am going
to be in Thailand in early November -- does anyone have any contacts
there?
Also, together with some wonderful people I met in the Philippines, I'm
planning
on setting up a coworking space in Cebu City.
Cebu is a fast-growing high tech center in the Philippines with
incredibly friendly,
productive, hard-working,english-speaking people, conveniences and
diverse
food choices like California, 130,000 college students, excellent
broadband
connectivity, direct flights to the US, and the possibility of a high
standard
of living for a fraction of the first world cost. There are beaches,
too.. :-)

It's my #1 choice to set something like this up, after 5 years of
searching
(and checking out Panama, almost all other countries in Latin America,
India, and China.)
The idea would be to set it up so that there is an (optional) attached
place
to stay.
Who would be interested in working at a place like that for a while?
Getting a better feel for this would really help us in figuring out how
to set this up...
What would be important to you in terms of facilities and location?
High end hostel, 5 start resort, something inbetween? :-)
What would you be worried about before booking a flight to a 3rd world
country
to do this?
Any thoughts for a discussion would be highly appreciated :-)
And, more generally, anyone else out there who has gone international?
Thanks,
-Rick

i haven't been there in 20 years, but i remember it having very
beautiful beaches and everyone was super friendly. if there was a
coworking space set up there, i would be delighted to check it out!
(btw, if anyone finds themselves in cebu, there's a super-specific
kind of sweet treat that i'll need to have you bring back for me.)

I think there's some eco-entrepreneur <a
href="http://sheagunther.org/blog/?p=665">trying to do something in
Thailand</a>, actually. I'll email him and see what he's actually
doing.

I'd be interested in an attached place to stay too and a location in a
city where you can also find some cafes with wireless to work outside
of the co-working space.
