In general, we like to see posts that would be useful to the majority
of the global coworking community and that don't focus in on one
particular space. Recently, I approved a post that announced the
opening of a new space in Phoenix. In light of some feedback about
this post, I'm wondering how you feel about allowing new spaces to
post this type of announcement on the global blog? Is that useful to
you or would you prefer the global blog to remain non-space specific?

Thoughts?

I think its great because it could be beneficial to those "coworking
visa" pop-ins. People will be able to get the word out to their
coworking members where they can go to get some work done in a different
city.

I personally don't have a problem with "promotional" posts, like new space announcements, but what I don't want to happen is the blog to become a place for press releases (which is how the new space in Phoenix post read).

If someone is announcing a new space, I'd like to see something a bit more creative and/or constructive than simply an announcement in order for it to show up on the blog home page.

If you're announcing a new space, odds are you've got some tips, tricks, or lessons learned along the way. Share them, and then use that as an opportunity to make yourself known. It's a very slippery slope when there's such a volume of new spaces opening that every single one of them has the chance to spend some time on the blog homepage without investing just a little bit of time in contributing something broadly valuable first.

Another idea is that we could create a "new space announcements" category in wordpress and filter those posts out of the homepage and into a separate page/tab/category listing, so that people interested could check that and we don't have to worry about the "promote-y-ness" that happens with press-release style announcements.

Thanks for putting this out there, Angel - it's a great question!

I'd prefer that we keep new space announcements out of the main coworking blog.  Straight announcements, unless (as Alex said) they are couched in the format of giving recommendations, suggestions, or telling a great story, really don't contribute much to the wider coworking community. And truly, they don't give much back to the coworking space itself - I'm going to make a bold assumption and figure that most spaces won't get new members coming to them because they read an announcement on the coworking blog.  In Seattle, we've seen that new members come from community outreach within our neighborhood and city, not from (iter)national press (being so bold as to consider our coworking blog such press!).

I'd like to see posts focus more on the how-to's, great suggestions, or great stories that come out of coworking spaces, new and old.  And if that happens to coincide with a new space opening, then well, groovy!

Thanks, Angel - this is inspiring me to finally get a post to you! ;)

Having just read Rework, I don't think we need to add a layer of
complexity to blog submissions (after all, just one guy wore shorts to
work--why create a policy?) :) I'm the moderator of the blog and now
that people have weighed in, I'll be better able to pick out something
that reads like a press release versus text that adds value to the
wider community.

I'm also working with our community content company, Kapost to see if
we can have a few "submission guidelines" pop up when someone clicks
on contribute. I think we'll be find moving forward from here with
those 2 things in place. Feel free to keep the feedback coming my way
about the global blog. It is a work in progress!
