Hello Coworkers,

I am pleased to announce that I have finished categorizing every
thread on the Google Group. I compartmentalized the information into
about 20 topics to make it easier for everyone to find answers to
FAQs. The spreadsheet is meant to be an alternative to Google's search
function by facilitating navigation by category through past threads
on the Coworking Google Group.

We've posted a spreadsheet called Categorized Group Threads in the
files section of this Google Group. It's intended to be 1) a primary
research tool for anyone interested in coworking, and 2) an ever-
improving document. If you find you can add to or improve the
document, please feel free to edit it and share your work with the
community.

Here are some trends that I have noticed that I have been asked to
share.

1) Some space owners who have had a space for years did not even
realize that they were coworking. This makes me assume that the number
of coworking spaces in the world is significantly larger than I
originally thought.

2) People wanting to startup his or her own coworking space. The
overwhelming majority of introductions are from people wanting to
venture into coworking. This can be seen in the amount of
“Introduction: Individual” and “Introduction: Prospective Space” tags.

3) People willing to share personal commentary and stories regarding
their space and/or what has led them to coworking. On the topic of
sustainability, many of the same individuals dispense the same
paraphrased advise.

4) Media coverage has become another trend. In the last year of so
there seems to be a fair amount of media coverage by some reputable
sources such as Business Week, NY Times, CNN, The Guardian, etc.

This spreadsheet was the first step in creating the Coworking
Handbook. We hope that in a matter of weeks the Coworking Handbook
will be published to the group and used as the go-to guide for
everyone interested in coworking, from new comers, to people looking
to answer a few specific questions. The intention is not to reduce
coworking related chatter, but simply to reduce redundancy, give
people a strong fundamental understanding of the movement, and allow
the conversations to continue to evolve into some of the more
interesting threads that are being created.

Thanks and Enjoy

Holy wow Stephanie, this is incredible!

This is a great resource that can be extremely useful for researchers, first timers, and veterans.

How about posting this to Google Docs and making it publicly editable, so it can be kept up to date? Google is also discontinuing the Files section of Google Groups, so it should make more sense in the long term anyway.

Congrats and thanks!

Cheers,
Tony

Impressive, a million thanks, Stephanie!

I'll echo what Tony has said and request that we move this to a google doc so we can contribute/edit.

Hello Everyone

As this is my first post, will briefly introduce myself. I have been
avidly reading this Coworking Google Group for well over a year now
and have also been researching the possibility of opening a coworking
space in Brooklyn, New York on behalf of the Sarapis Foundation, the
organization with which Stephanie and I are involved. You can see
more at sarapisfoundation.org

You can see from this spreadsheet that Stephanie is able to put
together some really great work. She is now working hard on drafting
the Coworking Handbook, and based on the results so far, we are all
very excited to release v1.0 in the coming weeks.

Consider the spreadsheet that was posted today yours. It belongs to
the community. If you want to download it locally, put it up on
google docs, or change the file format, we encourage that. We only
ask that any improvements that are made are then shared with the
community. The document, in its current .ods format, has the thread
topics in column A as live links that direct you to the original
thread on the google group with a single click. You can also use the
auto filter function to view threads as they relate to each category,
one at a time. These two features are extremely useful for doing
research. We first tried to start the project in Google Docs to
facilitate its collaborative effort, but we could not get the threads
to stay as live links when we copied and pasted them into a Google
spreadsheet. The amount of data was also presenting some lagging
issues on Google's platform. If anyone can find a way to maintain the
linked threads as it transfers to Google Docs, that would be great.

If you are having trouble opening the file, you can download Open
Office at http://www.openoffice.org/ . Open Office is a powerful open
source productivity suite that is available for free. Open Office is
but one of many open source programs that supports open document
standards such as .ods.

Best

It's important to note that the files section will be disabled on January 13th.  Google is cleaning up and removing this from all groups starting early next year.

To unsubscribe from this group, send email to coworking+...@googlegroups.com.

Hi Folks.  I was looking for our organization's spreadsheet categorizing the conversations on this Google Group and discovered it was difficult to find so I've published it on Google Docs.  You can also download it from our website.
