Hi Cadu,

you are right, thanks for the reminder. We will think of something and post it on the list then.

Me too.  What ideas do people have?

Maybe a month of promotion for a free day or working in spaces that are also participating in a synchronized teleconference event like http://www.pangeaday.org/ ?

What sort of special experiences could we do for our existing members that also would attract others wanting to join in the celebration? Rather than turn this into a marketing game, I'd rather create something authentic and meaningful.

Could celebrate by offering our members a rebate off their months dues or something and maybe it could be a card that they in turn can give to another wannabe coworker for the same value as an incentive to sign up!

Ha!  I was just warming up....
Start a new page on your site to profile your members, but from our perspective or ask ome coworker to write about another and post the warm fuzzies.  Most of us have some sort of profile page, but it's just a commercial for their company.  Create something that says "thank you" and you're special by telling a simple inspiring story about what they bring to the community and why they make coworking so great.

And THEN give them a gift card for a free something...;o).

I'd love it if we could coordinate something that got coworkers out of
the spaces and into the public's eye. Like a massive public coworking
flashmob or something. Think about how cool it would be to show off
coworking in a town square or public park or other unexpected place.
People would be interested and ask questions and maybe even join in!
If this happened in multiple cities at once, it would truly be a
newsworthy event...

I dunno, I feel like we have this great thing, but it's often hidden
in spaces that no one knows about. Time to show it off :)

Text is impersonal and movie testimonials could be better than this. The people voice's and expressions in the movies can show the experiences provided by coworking better. I'm not comfortable on only offering discounts because it doesn't give them any experience that they could have in a coworking space unless saving money and there are lots of.

As Alex said, we should focus on the people experience. They could talk about:

- How coworking is helping them to develop their business and/or career?
- How coworking is improving their social skills?
- Why they chose to work in a coworking space?
- What they think coworking is a good option for entrepreneurs?
- And so on...

Coworking Meetups are good ideas as well! Do you imagine those same people having presentations about coworking? It could be a good chance to explain how coworking is helping them and to show their skills and/or business. We could record and publish everything in the internet. ;)

My two cents!

Yep, I was thinking video too. But instead of them just sharing their experience have them share how their coworking experience is affected by other coworkers.  Combo, video testimony/encouragement.

I like the idea of coworking "flash mobs."  We could get tables, chairs, wifi and cowork in public spaces.  I could help organize in New York.  What do folks think?

Also - why is August 9th "Coworking Day"?

Lots of great ideas here already! A few thoughts...

For the Docking Station, we were thinking of doing a few things:

1. "Pick your coworkers" for national coworking day. Invite folks
from out their homes, offices, etc to work at TDS with people that
they "really like to" work with (hence, choose/pick your coworkers)
2. Invite the nonprofits into the conference space to explore the
'community of coworking' (we offer our conf. room free to non
profits).
3. Do a brown bag session with community leaders that's based on the
coworking values (we've adapted 6 for our space: collaboration,
openness, community, localism, sustainability and accessiblity) but
not exactly talking up coworking...rather, talk about how knowledge
workers are the ;future economy' and use the values as a backdrop/tie
into economic development.

I'm sure that there's a ton more we can do. We're already planning
for 8/9 and are going to make a pretty big day of it here.

To add into the mix, Coworking Seattle (http://www.coworkingseattle.org) is planning a fun outdoors event on August 9th here in Seattle. Details are still getting worked out, but the general idea is going to be a sort of instant-coworking spot set up in one of our parks. Celebrate coworking in a park, work together, share food, and shout it out while we're doing it. Should be fun! I'll send out the details once we've worked them out.

Hooray!

Do any of you have videoconferencing as part of your telework
center? I work at an HD videoconferencing company and was thinking
of trying to have all the co working sites call into our bridge that
day and then stream it on a site that everyone can see. But it would
only work if there is VC capability on the co working end as well.
For those that don't have the ability, send your photos from coworking
day to soc...@lifesize.com and we'll publicize it that way instead.

I have H.323...but, it might be easier (unless Lifesize has a free app to download for win and macs?) to multipoint with Skype or ooVoo (or other such easy to grab videoconf app) or, now, FREE Google+ Hangout uses Vidyo multipoint video capability.  VERY cool.  not yet sure how many people can connect, but, it would be a great test!

FYI...Lifesize rocks!  My blog:  http://TelBitConsulting.com (I specialize in VC and collaboration)

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, I realize not everyone has H.323. The other
ideas would be great. Unfortunately, I just wouldn't be able to
promote them via LifeSize since, as you know, we're a competitor of
some of those other products. We could have Skype users call in, but
it might be kind of wonky because they'd have to be on a specific
version of Skype to integrate with our passport. We do have LifeSize
Desktop, but it's unfortunately only for PCs (as a Mac user I'm ready
for a Mac version myself!)

Anyway, I'd still love to post pictures from the events around the
country on our pages, since co-working/teleworking are near and dear
to us.

P.S> Just read your blog- now I recognize who you are! I've seen you
on our FB page from time to time.

How about doing something like Why Do You Do What You Do?, the art project created by Tony Deifell, where people write their answer to that question on a sheet of paper, then pose for a photo or shoot a short video. When people put some serious thought into their responses to that question, the results can be profound. I'd love to see a collection of WDYDWYD photos and videos created by coworkers around the globe on a single day.

Incidentally, Tony coworks out of the HUB Soma in San Francisco, where they have some of his life-size WDYDWYD prints on display.

I have added some coworking folks to my Google+ "Circles".  We could test the video chat "Hangout" between a few sites....if people want.  I m pretty much always available for video conferencing testing....and evangelizing.

The power of this technology to bring people together is just now being realized...

Susan: Yup. It's super simple. Anyone with a smartphone can snap a pic or shoot a short vid and tweet them with the hashtags #wdydwyd and #coworking (or some other hashtag we come up with for Coworking Day 2011).

Speaking of which, is there a Coworking Day hashtag? Should there be? Or should we just use #coworking?

Thoughts?

Cari-
What if I were able to use an opensource proxy on our end (i.e Yate
can handle the codec just fine but we'd have to do a test run a day or
two before so i can tweak the script on our side so your service
wouldn't know it was being sent through a SIP gateway)? As of two
weeks ago i have a collocated server thats on a fast line w/ nothing
on it(I pre-paid and just am waiting out the contract which luckily
isn't until Oct. 1st)... I'm sure there's got to be at least one other
similar, freely and un-funded bridge/gateway or even streaming server
that doesn't have a corporate backer. I just don't know if your
company would be ok with that?

Yeah even an html5 tweetwall would aggregate anything that someone
posted with a hashtag... I've seen it done for conferences (adtech),
just throw it on a bot/special account which scrapes fb/twitter/g+ for
the tag and adds it... thatd be easy + prob even something that you
could add as a 'page' to the wiki (definitely the blog thanks to the
latest few wp upgrades).....

Brent,

My only concern would be for the quality of the video. Since our
company does HD videoconferencing, I'd want to make sure that what
we're streaming is all HD so that no one thinks lack of quality is due
to our equipment. It may be a little hard to pull off right now :
( But, I'd still like to publicize whatever we come up with for
coworking day on our social outlets. I think the photos are a great
idea. I'm assuming someone will set up a Flickr page so we can post
them all in one album? Or I'd be happy to set up an album on our
Flickr page and link to it.

I can vouch for Lifesize quality....but, you are right, HD could be tough from all the locations.

Lets give Google+ hangout a try too....

Well the video would be different for each user, regardless of if we
all were on your platform....i.e. me with my HD cam, you with your HD
cam, then someone else with their flip-phone.... but i understand your
concern...this would be like any other video streaming service, you're
video quality starts with the quality of the source camera... the
software/bandwidth/platform on this end wouldn't be the issue (we
could put a disclaimer on the page if it'd suffice?)

So, now that we've made our big announcements today, maybe we can
capitalize on ClearSea. Let me see if I can set up a bridge to call
into and anyone who wants to can call in from their mobile device.
They'd have to download Clearsea but it's free. Will get back to you
later in the week.

Our company is testing out a 48-way bridge this week with our new
software. If all goes well, I've give you all details and we can all
call in on co-working day and chat about what we're doing in each city
via video. We'll also stream it from our website. Links, etc. to
come.

So, the bridge thing I proposed won't work with the mobile call ins-
YET. They are working on it as we speak. In the mean time, is there
a consolidated list of everything that is going on for coworking day?
I'd like to do a blog post on our company site and maybe have a list
of all the coworking activities taking place.

I second Cari's request! If you are planning a celebration for
Coworking Day 2011, please send links, photos, and any other
information to me at goneco...@gmail.com. I'm hoping to compile a
sampling from around the country (maybe world?!) and feature it on
Shareable.net. A great way to get your space noticed and spread the
coworking spirit!

Thanks,
Beth

Hi, we also join to the Coworking Day!
We,  PAX Coworking in Tokyo, will have big Jelly event on that day,
and also have a big party at night at the attached restaurant (downstairs)
'paxi house tokyo'.
(see this slide to see our new concept 'Working while Partying" and
Jelly saikoo: http://www.slideshare.net/kyopaxi/20110803coworking ,
though mostly written in Japanese)

Japan is very hot these days on Coworking.
Last week Tony Bacigalupo, the Mayor of New Work City, visited Tokyo, and
all the tickets of the Coworking symposium was sold out in 24 hours.

So, please visit Japan to feel the new wave of Coworking. We welcome you
and if you want we can introduce reasonable accommodation for you,
because our coworking space and the restaurant have comprehensive
business alliances with some guest houses.

We wish you all have a happy Coworking day!

Please, please send links to info about your events to Beth or post
links here. Our company is definitely writing a blog about it
tomorrow. We're a big company (www.lifesize.com) and have a large web
audience, so it's a great chance to get the word out for some of the
smaller coworking sites. Having all the activities in one location
(like Shareable.net) is key to getting the word out. I think Beth has
graciously volunteered to pull everything together if you email her at
goneco...@gmail.com.

Hi everyone,

Happy Coworking Day! from St. Louis - well, I'm just visiting here, but I live in Tokyo so I get to say that as if I'm in JST ;-}As Kyo said, the idea of coworking, coworking spaces and jelly are all becoming popular lately.

I'm here for a meetup to cowork with my coworkers in a distributed company Automattic (we run a bunch of blogs on WordPress.com). We usually all work from home or coworking spaces.

Anyways, here are some more info to illustrate the coworking movement in Japan:

Storify summary of NWC Tony's visit (by @socialcompany)

Jelly! map by @cognitom (Tsutomu Kawamura), owner of Open Source Cafe coworking space

It still may be kind of hard to find info on coworking spaces in Japan in English, but feel free to ping me (@naokomc) or Kyo (@paxi) on Twitter if you're interested.

Happy #coworkingday !

Congrats Julie! Happy coworking day everyone!

Visiting the amazing coworking communities in Japan and China has shown me just how much we have in common, even across cultural, political, and economic borders. It's also shown me firsthand just how big our movement truly is.

Much more on that soon. In the meantime, high fives all around!
