At last Wednesday's meeting there was some discussion of seeing if
CoLab could become part of this "Coworking Passport" concept. Where
members of one coworking location could get free visits to other
coworking locations if they happen to be traveling and in a town that
has one. Alex Hillman brought this up when he came and talked to the
group last month. But after doing some research (which simply means I
Google'd "coworking passport") it seems the concept is still in the
development phase. But Alex Hillman seemed to be in the middle of of
it. Can someone contact Alex and find out if they worked this
passport concept out and what it actually means. Someone at the
meeting this week seemed to be e-mailing Alex as we were talking about
having him down again, so I wonder if that person would not mind
contacting Alex and finding out more. I apologize to who ever it was,
there was a wall between me and this person so I could only hear his
voice.

Anyway, I don't think it will drive a lot of traffic to CoLab but
being part of this passport network will do a good job of getting
CoLab out in the space with the other coworking locations. Plus it is
another incentive to join CoLab, albeit maybe a small one.

Or some could give me Alex's e-mail address and I could contact him
myself. I could not find his e-mail address.

I sent him a tweet about it. I'll relay back what he says. I don't
have his email address, but he's @alexknowshtml on twitter.

Just to keep you in the loop I had contacted Alex in behalf of Colab(Jane) and here was his response:

Greg,
Thanks for the intro! I'll see you in a few days in Miami!

Jane,
I've seen the Orlando community evolve over the last couple of years, and have lots of thoughts on how Colab can best serve Orlando.

My partner and I have, on many occasions, spent an hour or two in person or on the phone and really helped another coworking space down a strong path of growth. One of our most recent successes was a new space that opened it's doors in Baltimore with 25 members: phenomenal success!

Since most coworking spaces can't afford "consulting" as most would offer, we've found that we can really be effective in short bursts and offer "microconsulting". Since coworking is something so important to me, I've dropped my usual microconsulting rate of $140/hour to $100 for a one-hour, highly focused consulting session to get you on track.

You can read more about that offering at: http://unstick.me/coworking.html

I really hope that we get a chance to work together. I saw the space and loved it, and really want to see it succeed. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Alex

I met Alex H when he was here a few weeks ago and I loved the idea of
a coworking passport. I have since had several ideas about this,
including the idea that there should be a site that lists all the
different coworking spots in the US and (ideally) around the world. I
wrote to him a couple weeks ago and haven't heard back but I know he's
been busy with SXSW and FOWA. If anyone can post here or let me know
off-list when they get ahold of him that'd be great.

While we're talking about passport-ish stuff, I also thought I'd share our experience at Brikolodge, which is Miami's cow-orking spot.  A few of us Olrando peeps went to Brikolodge on Monday (the off day betweeen barcampmiami and FOWA) to cowork.  There were 3 Miami folks there at first and after they left it was all Orlando peeps....we literally hijacked their space :)  It was really awesome to see such a turn out though.

I just spoke with Hillman. I'll be covering an hour of his time for a colab unstick.me live. The goal is to use it as a rallying point for a greater approach / possible increased Alex Hillman involvement.

If you haven't been a part of unstick.me live, it's great. He does a ustream video feed and a chat room. He's primarily talking to whomever, but other members of the community chime in and offer suggestions in the chat room. This is a *great* opportunity for a little exposure and for hearing what other folks in Alex's world think.

Whenever it's scheduled, let's all try to be online and in the chat room -- even if you've never been to colab before or have little interest in it. This will be a chance to discuss what we want Orlando's coworking to be.

Keep up the great discussions, I haven't been chiming in much but I read every word ;)

Best,

Alex Rudloff

No worries guys. I just know Alex's time is valuable and I know his advice on this subject is sage like. It'll be of benefit. As much free advice as he's given us, I think it's a fair for both parties.

I asked him to reach out to the original folks who contacted him to get things organized (Greg/Jane I take it from the earlier email). Looking forward to it.

Hey Everyone!
Since Alex has taken the lead on securing one of these sessions, we
need a couple of things from you:

1) Picking a date. Since there are more than one of you, someone's
going to have to take the lead on your end to pin it down.
2) Submitting questions. This is important for two reasons: First, it
lets us prioritize and make the most of the one hour session. I use
Google Moderator for this, and created one for this session at
http://tr.im/gQV5
Second, knowing what topics we will cover ahead of time will mean that
if you CANT make it to the live session, you have a chance to get your
question in. We'll record the whole session so you can share/archive
it.

It'd be best to identify a point person, someone to say "yes we've
made a collective decision" and report it to me. I get these digests
weekly and read them (and have for some time), but if you have
specific questions related to the unstick.me session, drop me a line
at ple...@unstick.me

Since there is going to be a 2nd Colab board meeting March 11th, I'd propose we discuss dates and questions for Alex's help at that meeting.

If it helps keep things moving, we could do the session during that meeting. The benefit to using google moderator is you don't have to spend a whole meeting on deciding what to ask. You can ask a question, and if someone asked the same/similar question, they can just vote for it. Popular questions rise to the top and get priority.

I like the idea of having our group in one room while we interact with Alex via unstick.me, since it should foster a lot of real time collaboration and contagious energy.

However, will March 11 work for you Alex, since its right before SXSW? When do you fly in?

OK, it's set!

We can use iChat or Skype video chat for two way A/V, so let me know what works best for you and I'll plan accordingly.

Finally, please don't forget to submit/vote on questions for the session at http://tr.im/gQV5

Colab'ers,  I think we're going to need to secure a projector for the conference room on March 11th. iChat can get up to 4 in a session, but I don't think Skype can. but if we project Alex, then everyone can see comfortably. Do you agree?  and does anyone know where we can borrow one? :)
