Meetup.com represents so much of what is wrong with making money on
the internet, but I believe there are some of "the right kind of
people" using Meetup for good.

I messaged a guy who organizes a couple of groups that... well...
already exist. Yes, the one is really called "Coffee Event". The
Digital Media meetup shared several bullet points with the mission
statement of CoLab.

This is what I said. Do you think I did the right thing?

Peace,
Ryan

Hi Tim...

I saw 2 of your groups - Coffee Event and Digital Media. I'm glad to
see people so passionate about bringing together communities of
motivated, likeminded, initiative-oriented folks. At the same time, I
think you may be re-inventing the wheel, and I wanted to introduce you
to a few existing groups that have a similar mission.

#1 Likemind.us - International, in 60+ cities, a very similar format
to your event. Orlando has had one for almost 3 years. Folks get
together for coffee and conversation at the same time as thousands of
people all over the globe.

#2 CoLab Orlando - more than just a group, it is a physical location
in the very heart of Downtown where independent contractors,
entrepreneurs, and people who work remotely for large companies come
together to work every day. They also hold events like work parties,
lunch-and-learns, unconferences, and social time. It is free to try,
but once you check it out, you will want to help the group pay the
rent on the office space they have on Orange Avenue. The concept is
called Coworking, and there are coworking spaces all over the world,
from Argentina to France.

I don't think you should change your mission with the groups you've
started, but I strongly encourage you to check out these and a few
other groups and events you will inevitably hear about from the
participants of Likemind and CoLab. There is a community out there,
and it is very inclusive and welcoming of new people and ideas. Come
by and see if we match your expectations.

Peace,
Ryan Price

Hey Ryan,

Well I think you did the right thing in letting this guy know about
similar groups in the area. I know if I were starting a group, I
would defintely want to know about other local groups which have
similar goals. I am sure he appreciated the info.

It looks reasonable enough.  The only extra suggestion might be to ask him to come by and see if our communities can combine?  If I read that email and felt challenged I might think you were suggesting to abandon my efforts and join your groups???

And the links were missing from the email.
