Gents,

As I mentioned earlier, part of our CSR this year as CCIL, I have been looking at best ways to give back to society with a keen interest in rugby especially.
Initially I intended to coach patch but due to various constraints it was not sustainable.

 So, I took some time out and thought through it together with a few other current and former rugby players hence we have initiated a campaign we refer to as BIG RUGBY.

We are seeking to find ways we can come back to our former schools and develop rugby talent at a younger age bracket. For CCIL I am appealing if the company may support by funding to hire an ambulance to be used at the event we have organized very soon.

Please see below notes to better understand the concept;

 1.   Rugby Development
   1.1   – To ensure that the calibre of rugby players graduating into senior school rugby and into club level have solid skills and a great understanding of the game. These are the players who will raise the standard of rugby in Kenya in yhe near future.

    1.2  Good life skills are passed on to the players. It’s a waste to have a great rugby player but with a poor attitude / poor life skills.

    1.3     Revival of the former Rugby School's powerhouses – St. Mary’s School, Lenana School & Nairobi School.

2.  Implementation Strategy to achieve the above objectives:

 2.1.     Coaching & Mentoring the U16 age group – The U-16 players (form 1’s & form 2’s) will be coached and mentored by a coach assigned to the team by BIG RUGBY. We have already identified and given instruction to some select coaches. Patch in particular will be coached by Dan Mubea.

2.2.     Setting up two Under-16, 10-aside rugby tournaments in October to gauge the performance of coaches. (Note we are measuring the level of understanding of the game basics. Its not about winning the tournament). The tournament only serves as a target for players to work towards.
-Due to the effect of the teachers strike, we will have only one tournament this year at Saints 30th Oct.

3. Organization and Resources.

    3.1 Team invitation letters have already been sent out to select schools for this year's event on Oct 30th.
    3.2  Tournament name is "Ellis Cup" that coincides well with the rugby world cup - Web Ellis Cup (who was the founder of the sport) and our mission is to develop players that will feature for Kenya in the coming rugby world cups.

   3.3 Nairobi School and St. Mary’s are the prefered hosts. This is to re-ignite a similar initiative that was there back in 2002 - 2003.

   3.4 The tournament will have a Main Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield competition.

   3.5 Ideally there should be 2 legs but as mentioned this year we will have only one. There shall be an overall competition winner.

 3.6 The tournament should be a relatively small competition – 8 competing teams. Invited teams:
1. Nairobi School
2. St. Mary’s School,
3. Lenana School,
4. Upperhill,
5. Alliance,
6. Mangu,
7. Strathmore School
8. Ofafa Jericho

3.7 The School administrations are to provide the venue and that includes perhaps:  Marking the pitches – 2 pitches may be required, washrooms, security and other basic necessities as necessaey

4. Financials and budget estimates currently are as follows;
1. Trophies & Medals 24k
2. An ambulance - 10k
3. Referee’s – 9k
4. Stationery - 2k
                      --------------
Total =           45000
                      ---------------
                      ---------------

 5. Next steps and way forward

To develop the initiative further,  we have approached and spoken to Mr. Joe Munaifu who has been facilitating coaching age grade rugby players at Parklands sports club and looking to partner with him in order to utilize connections that he has. In future our dream is to send some of our products (players) to rugby academies in some of the best rugby playing nations such as S.A, Newzealand, England etc.

Cheers,

Hello  Directors,

As a representative of Big Rugby initiative I would like to give a special thank you to CCIL for assisting in the funding of the inaugural Ellis Cup U-16 rugby competition hosted at St. Mary's School on 30th Oct 2015.

It was a great success with 4 Schools participating namely Nairobi School (two teams), St.Mary's School, Upperhill and Makini. In total we had 5 teams and they played in a round robin fixture format.

Nairobi School - A emerged winners of the tournament after winning convincingly all their matches. Their final match against St. Mary's was especially a hot encounter but they managed to blow their opponents to a 21 - 0 victory.

Please see below the position each team finished:

1. Nairobi School - A
2. St. Mary's School
3. Makini
4. Nairobi School - B
5. Upperhill

At the end of the tournament, the winners in the first, second and third position were presented with the respective trophies and medals. Before presenting the trophies, the guest of honor Mr. Biko Adema, who currently plays for Kenya 7s applauded the initiative and said he was willing and ready to partner with BIG RUGBY to help develop the game much more in future.

Other notable persons of interests that were in attendance were Mr. Wycliffe Nyang'ate a former head of School in Nairobi School class of 2004 and a Patch Machine player. He also praised the initiative and was very supportive indicating that his organization the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) of Kenya were looking out for such initiatives that can be used to facilitate education of proper ethics and discipline to young athletes at an early age. Through coaching and mentor ship programs we can look into ways of ensuring we develop a generation that is upright and against the vice of corruption that has plagued our country for many years. We therefore hope to engage him and his team further to discuss the opportunities and strategy this initiative can use to have a greater impact in future.

As a representative CCIL, I was happy of the impact our contribution had. Through CSR contributions we were able to make an impact and spark a fire that hopefully will develop into a bigger venture. I was both encouraged and grateful for this.

For the up coming season, BIG RUGBY is engaging Nariobi School and St. Mary's to look into the possibility of conducting Rugby Clinics every Friday's from next semester where the schools will have a joint training session and Big Rugby Coaches will work with the junior teams teaching them basics of the game and providing mentor ship where necessary. This and more opportunities will be reviewed to see how best to support Kenya Rugby and School category especially for the power houses rugby teams in this level.

See attached a write-up on BIG RUGBY and also photos of the presentation ceremony during the Ellis Cup on 30th Oct 2015.

God bless you lads.

Cheers,

Teddy
