The discontinuation of Windows Movie Maker has led to the appearance of scams abusing its name. In late 2016, a few months before the discontinuation of the Windows Essentials suite (including Movie Maker), a website named windows-movie-maker.org (no longer accessible) which offered a tampered version of Windows Movie Maker, appeared as one of the top results when searching for "Movie Maker" and "Windows Movie Maker" on Google and Bing, a scam only widely recognized as such in 2017.[30] It was identical to the real Windows Movie Maker, however, unlike the official and free Windows Movie Maker by Microsoft, it would not let users save a video without purchasing. Upon installing and executing the program, the user was greeted with a dialogue box explaining that it was a trial and a purchase was required. ESET also detected a malware called Win32/Hoax.MovieMaker in the above-mentioned version. The fake will also restrict the installation of the WLE (Windows Live Essentials) Movie Maker by modifying the Windows registry.[31]
(AP) -- Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it will make a separate version of the Windows 7 computer operating software for Europe that does not include its Internet Explorer Web browser, as it tries to head off another antitrust scuffle with regulators there. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2'); ); At the same time, Microsoft has left open the possibility that this measure will not satisfy the European Union, which said in January that the software maker's practice of selling Internet Explorer as a part of Windows violates its antitrust rules. The EU ordered Microsoft to separate the Web surfing software from its PC operating system. The preliminary decision came after a yearlong investigation into complaints from a rival browser maker, Norway's Opera Software ASA, which said Microsoft's practices amounted to an unfair distribution advantage. Since then, Mozilla Corp., which makes the Firefox browser, and Google Inc. have signed on as third parties against Microsoft in the case.Microsoft's browser is the most widely used worldwide, but Firefox is gaining in popularity and Google, the top Web search provider, has released its own Web browser, Chrome.Microsoft is hoping to land on regulators' good side this time, after racking up $2.63 billion in fines from a previous antitrust case. The European Commission found the company had violated competition rules by bundling its media player software with Windows and by making it difficult for rivals' programs to communicate with Microsoft's.The company had already built into Windows 7 a way to disable Internet Explorer, a change that seemed designed to satisfy regulators' concerns. The software maker would not say whether the EU has acknowledged the change."We're committed to making Windows 7 available in Europe at the same time it launches in the rest of the world, but we also must comply with European competition law as we launch Windows 7," said Kevin Kutz, a public affairs director for the company, in an e-mailed statement.Windows 7 is due out on Oct. 22. The Europe-only versions were described earlier by CBS Corp.'s CNET News.Kutz said Microsoft will give computer makers the option to install IE on Windows 7 computers headed for Europe. It will also give PC users who want the browser a way to obtain it.In a blog post, Dave Heiner, a deputy general counsel for Microsoft, wrote that the company's decision to split IE and Windows 7 doesn't "preclude the possibility of alternative approaches emerging through commission processes."He said alternative remedies have been proposed, including pre-installing other browsers in Windows 7, or a screen that would prompt people to choose their browsers from a list of options. The EU has not yet issued its final decision. Microsoft requested a hearing to respond to the preliminary findings, but the parties could not agree on a date.Shares of Microsoft added 28 cents to close at $22.83.2009 The Associated Press. Microsoft, for instance, can grant or withhold market-development funds more or less at will under the new licensing agreements. Such funds pay for a substantial part of a PC maker's television and print advertisements and can add up to huge sums. PC makers that agree to ship all PCs with Windows, for example, can receive $10 per PC in market development funds.
But Fama charged that the uniform licensing provision, which mandates that all PC makers receive the same contract, leaves Microsoft plenty of room to play favorites and reset terms to the detriment of PC makers.
Microsoft sent a letter to Gateway dated Dec. 12, explaining that Microsoft would soon be changing to a uniform licensing mechanism as required by the settlement. The new terms would affect contracts written after Dec. 16 for the top 20 PC makers.
For instance, under the two-strikes provision, Microsoft could terminate any PC maker's Windows licenses without notice after sending two default notices. The notices would not need to be for serious offenses, either, Fama said. Under its previous license, Gateway had a three-strike provision.
Gateway, like Hewlett-Packard and Sony before the remedy proceeding started, balked at another provision that would effectively prevent PC makers from suing Microsoft for infringement of their patents. Microsoft contends that changes later made to the settlement resolved these issues.
Microsoft also more closely circumscribed release dates of software. Under Gateway's old licensing agreement, the company could begin shipping the new Windows version as soon as any other PC maker. The uniform licensing agreement would restrict PC makers to a date communicated by Microsoft, Fama testified. Therefore, Microsoft could let some companies sell a new OS before others and sweep up early buyers.
Gateway also faulted another provision of the new licensing agreement, which requires PC makers to pay a Windows royalty on every PC shipped, even if it didn't include Windows. To top it off, to qualify for market development funds, PC makers have to put a Microsoft OS on every PC. As a result, trying to sell non-Windows PCs, or even PCs without software, is a financial loser for computer makers.
Fama's testimony also included the volume discount that PC makers receive on Windows, but that part of his testimony was removed from the publicly distributed copies, with one exception: PC makers selling one to 599,999 units receive no discount.
Movie Maker 2 (www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker) differs from other video editors in two fundamental ways. Instead of importing camcorder footage in the standard, space-intensive format, it stores it in a compressed, proprietary format. And Movie Maker 2's export options work best for viewing on computer monitors instead of TV sets.
PC makers, jilted of late by consumers attracted to tablets and smartphones, are pinning their hopes for a change in fortunes on the October launch of the Windows 8 operating system, announced last week.
During the key holiday sales seasons in the second half, PC makers such as HP , Dell and Lenovo will also see competition from Microsoft and Google , both of which have recently launched their own tablet PCs. Apple is also expected to unveil the iPhone 5 in October.
Suppliers to PC makers are also suffering. The microprocessor maker AMD warned on Monday that its second-quarter revenues would be down about 11 per cent on the first quarter, after previously predicting a 3 per cent rise. It blamed softer sales late in the quarter in China and Europe, along with a weaker consumer buying environment for PC makers.
Last month, Boriss blasted the ballot for giving preference to Apple's Safari based on the alphabetical ranking by browser maker. Initially, she did not spell out that her take was a personal one; the appearance of her blog on the Mozilla site led some, including Computerworld, to assume it was Mozilla's position as well.
Parties to the case, which include the three browser makers and the European Committee for Interoperable Systems (ECIS), a trade group whose members include Opera and other long-time Microsoft rivals Oracle and IBM, have until Monday to file comments with the commission.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Microsoft's latest quarterly earnings slipped, even as the world's largest software maker showed modest progress adapting to a shift away from the personal computers that have been its financial foundation for decades.
Microsoft is still trying to working with device makers to come up with the proper mix of machines at different prices to appeal to consumers and corporate customers, said Peter Klein, the company's chief financial officer.
Asus doesn't have a very high profile in the United States (the Padfones haven't even been sold here), but it's on the rise worldwide. Along with Lenovo, it's one of the few PC manufacturers whose shipments are increasing year-over-year, making it the rare PC maker that is doing well despite the market's stagnation in the face of saturation and the tablet phenomenon. Still, the company wants to diversify.
