Countertop Design Trends: What’s hot in New York?

Whether a designer deals in traditional or more contemporary kitchens,
one thing is certain in New York - the use of granite is waning.
Evelyn Benatar, of New York Interior Design Inc., www.nyinteriordesign.com,
says that granite is losing favor, primarily because it’s been so
overused.

Linda Blair, of Blair Interiors, agrees and says that solid surface is
also out, at least in kitchens. She also thinks concrete is out. Blair
says that she’s a classicist and prefers a natural look. "I like the
romance of marble," says Blair. The dark marble and white marble work
best in kitchens, she says. "The move is more and more to natural
things. There’s a huge sense of protecting our environment," she
adds.

Benatar says that she’s using a lot of Silestone, www.silestoneusa.com,
and her clients seem to really love the look. Benatar does both
traditional kitchens as well as transitional modern. She also uses a
lot of marble, especially Carrara marble, which she says is one of the
least-expensive marbles. She uses honed marble, never polished, to
give it a more natural look.

Benatar says that when a more modern, commercial look is desired,
stainless steel is the choice. She’s also getting requests for
concrete, wood and soapstone. But one of the hottest and newest looks
is glass countertops.
