Countertop Design Trends: Translating commercial style

In the past, there was a distinct difference between commercial and
residential color and style trends when it came to countertops. "The
rule of thumb was that commercial was muddier colors, easy
maintenance," says Ginguei Ebnesajjad, director of product styling and
development for DuPont Surfaces. Now, many colors are found in both
venues, though the more daring, brighter palettes often appear in
commercial applications first.

"Commercial spaces are more apt to be created by designers and
architects. Many commercial spaces are more trend-forward and
influence residential design further into the trend cycle," says
Ebnesajjad.

But, at the end of the day, the targets of commercial space are still
consumers, says Ebnesajjad. "Their emotional needs are similar."
Commercial designs work to create a wide variety of moods from very
serene to highly energetic. "They are more likely to grab the new
trends, because they want to be different, be the leader."

When it comes to residential applications, the consumer is buying a
product that he has to live with for quite some time and that can be
important in his ultimate color choice.
