Metal Countertops: The Stainless Option
Many homeowners and designers today are looking for countertops that
are not only durable but chic. This leads many to opt for countertops
made of granite, marble, quartz or glass, to name a few. But for
individuals looking to cook with an optimum surface and have a counter
that looks good while doing so, stainless steel is the answer.
Stainless steel is an ideal surface for avid cooks, which is why in
any commercial or industrial kitchen, stainless steel will prevail.
According to Renee Zonka, Associate Dean at Kendall College, a Chicago
culinary/hospitality school, stainless steel is used because it’s
lightweight and durable, and hot cooking items can be placed upon it
without fear. And because it’s nonporous, it cleans up well.
"Stainless, hands down, is easiest to clean," she says. In commercial
settings, she says, other nonporous and easily cleanable surfaces
(e.g., glass or quartz) aren’t used because they’re too fragile for
the use and abuse they’d receive.
Stainless steel can be customized with several different patterns,
shades and polish to make it attractive on its own. Even without such
patterns, stainless steel can make a nice backdrop for other elements
in the kitchen.
