Hi!

I was so jazzed when I found your countdown clock code at:

http://www.7is7.com/otto/countdclock.html

It is SO user-friendly!

The issue is - the time is inaccurate. I sincerely hope you can help?
I read the tips and instructions carefully and think that I have the settings correct (local time, "remainder per time unit:, etc). I am trying to countdown from January 31, 2009...yet the countdown displays there are 3 months and 119 days remaining.

So this will fit into the intended website, the font colour, width and height have been changed. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but if you're kind enough to take the time to troubleshoot, I thought I'd add that bit of information in case it is somehow influencing the functionality.

Here is the code that the countdown clock generated for me:

<iframe src="http://www.7is7.com/otto/countdown.html?year=2009&amp;month=1&amp;date=31&amp;hrs=0&amp;ts=24&amp;min=0&amp;sec=0&amp;tz=local&amp;lang=en&amp;show=Mds&amp;mode=r&amp;cdir=down&amp;bgcolor=%23FFFFFF&amp;fgcolor=%230C6877&amp;title=Countdown%20to%20Mexico%21" width="250" height="365" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden;width:10.6em;height:11.8em;"><a href="http://www.7is7.com/otto/countdown.html?year=2009&amp;month=1&amp;date=31&amp;hrs=0&amp;ts=24&amp;min=0&amp;sec=0&amp;tz=local&amp;lang=en&amp;show=Mds&amp;mode=r&amp;cdir=down&amp;bgcolor=%23FFFFFF&amp;fgcolor=%230C6877&amp;title=Countdown%20to%20Mexico%21">Countdown to Mexico!</a></iframe>

ANY chance you can please help?

Sincerely appreciated!
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for reporting this problem, I have investigated and found that
when the target date is the 31st it seems to miss one month in the
total. Strangely enough it only occurs for dates that are the 31st,
which is why this error it wasn't easily found.

I'll fix this problem probably later today, and report back here when
it's done.

Kind regards,
Otto

Hi Wendy,

This was an extremely interesting bug, that only occurred in months
shorter that 31 days (like September), when counting down to a 31st
date. The error was only in the month count, not in days, hours,
etc...

But it's fixed now and the fix is live. Feel free to try it and let me
know if it now works for you. Do forget to reload (ctrl-R in Firefox)
the page to get the latest version.

Thanks for reporting this problem, it really does help to maintain the
quality of the countdown clock if people like yourself report problems
they encounter.

Congratulations on your marriage! I hope it will be a wonderful day!
Otto

Hi Otto,

I must re-iterate how much I appreciate your quick attention and dedication to making the countdown clock truly a great feature.

I hope you don't mind my follow-up....because I'm still experiencing issues with the accuracy of the clock. For a countdown to the same date (January 31, 2009) the clock is showing 4 months and 24 days...of course neither of which is accurate.

In hopes of arriving at a solution, please find the code the preferences generated below:

Perhaps I've entered something incorrectly?
Thanks so much for your help - not to mention your thoughtful wishes regarding our upcoming marriage!

Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I embarrassed to say that the last changed introduced a new bug in
remainder mode when showing months and counting down to a 31st date
while being in a month shorter than 31 days, which caused it to show 1
day less. But in total mode all was correct as was the month total in
remainder mode. I don't know why you think 4 months is not correct, so
let's run through it:

It's now September 6, just before noon, here if I countdown to January
31st (without specifying time this counts down to the moment the day
starts - so 00:00 - military time) I get:

In totals mode:
4 months
146 days
3517 hours

In remainder mode:
4 months
24 days
12 hours

If I add 4 months to September 6th, we arrive at January 6th. From Sep
6th to Oct 6th there are 30 days, from Oct 6th to Nov 6th there are 31
days, from Nov 6th to Dec 6th there are 30 days and from Dec 6th to
Jan 6th there are 31 days. So these 4 months in total represent 122
days.

From Jan 6th noon to Jan 31st (the start of at 00:00) there are only
24 full days. If you add 24 days to Jan 6th noon, you arrive at Jan
30th noon. You then need to add another 12 hours to arrive at the
start of Jan 31st.

So in conclusion we from September 6th 12:00 (noon) we need to add 4
months, 24 days and 12 hours to arrive at the start of January 31st.

Now I pointed out that those 4 months represent 122 full days, adding
the remaining 24 days to that we get a total 146 full days.

146 days times 24 hours gives us 3504 hours, we need to add 12 to that
and we get 3516, plus 1 more hour to account for the return to
standard time from daylight saving time, which brings the total to
3517 hours.

These numbers are exactly what is shown, in both modes.
But maybe I am not understanding you correctly?

Take care,
Otto

Hi Otto,

Oh my....I was looking at the "24 days" thinking that was inaccurate. However, to get the total number of days *remaining* until January 31, 2009, I had to select the preference "Total per time unit", which I did not previously have.

Thanks SO much for the detailed explanation - I'm the one who's embarassed! ;-)

One last thing (I hope it's the last, as I feel bad for troubling you and have sincerely appreciated all of your expertise). Is there *any* way to remove the ad that appears above and below the countdown? I respect why this exists, but unfortunatley, this doesn't fit into the schema of our wedding website.
If the ads can not be removed, I completely understand.

If there's an alternate countdown app that you know of and would be kind enough to share, that would be terrific.

Either way - thank you very, very much for all of your assistance, Otto!

Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Yes there is a way to remove it, but it is rather tedious and you need
to have some technical knowledge. It involves hosting it yourself
(which is allowed under certain conditions) and making a few
modifications. Unfortunately it's not that straightforward and it's a
bit of a puzzle. But if you really want to try I can mail you some
tips.

I have thought of hosting some kind of paid version without the ad,
but I don't think that's going to be all that popular, even if the
price would be low like 1 or 2 dollars, and it will be a pain to
administer, it's hardly worth my time checking if someone has paid a
dollar and then go activate his or her account.

Take care,
Otto

Hi Otto,

Sincerely - THANKS.
You have gone above and beyond and it's really appreciated.

I see your conundrum...and empathize.

*If* there's a chance that you don't mind passing along those tips, that would be great. No rush, of course. If for whatever reason you don't get around to it, that's ok. You have been absolutely fantastic, Otto!

Please take care and the best of luck to you,
