Hi,
I see that we have official releases of couch DB for windows, macOS and Ubuntu under http://couchdb.apache.org/
I wanted to know if its supported on the below version or should I anticipate any issues?

lglat253:~ # cat /etc/SuSE-release

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)

VERSION = 11

PATCHLEVEL = 3

Thanks,

Radhika

I am not sure if there are packages available for Suse but what is the
result of

zypper search couchdb

from the command line?

Hi,

if you want the latest version, you may want to use the build service:

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/server:database/couchdb

Here is a guide to get started with the build service:

http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_Enduser_Info

Of course it may not be applicable if you are tied to your SLE version.

ok - so now you should check which version it is. I don't have a suse linux
box available. The actual CouchDB version is 1.5.0 but I don't think it
will be available in the package manager. Hopefully there is 1.2 which
would be ok ... then go and install it (zypper install couchdb). Be aware
that Erlang is needed ...

I had to add this repo-

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:ZaWertun:db/SLE_11_SP3/home:ZaWertun:db.repo

and then I could do a zypper install couchdb

I just want to make sure this is legit and I won't run into issues :)

Here is the version I installed-

Information for package couchdb:

Repository: home:ZaWertun:db (SLE_11_SP3)
Name: couchdb
Version: 1.5.0-49.3
Arch: x86_64
Vendor: obs://build.opensuse.org/home:ZaWertun
Installed: Yes
Status: up-to-date
Installed Size: 10.7 MiB
Summary: A document database server, accessible via a RESTful JSON API

awesome! It would be super cool if you add your findings into

https://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/Installation

or even better into

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COUCHDB/Installing+CouchDB

Simply create a user account and here on the mailinglist to be added as a
contributor to the (c)wiki.

Thanks

cool ^_^'

Radhika, what you did is absolutely legit and you won't run into any issues - as long as the person currently maintaining this package screws up :-).

the OpenSuSE build service is a collaborative, community effort. the person who built the package you're using had a need for CouchDB on SLE and he took the available package, rebuilt it for SLE and shared it in the open.

of course, you can't expect a SLA (and the associated headaches ;-) that you may get from a dedicated company / contract. in the open source game, you get things for free, and when these things start being important to run your business, you give back... nurturing the earth that grows the tree from which you picked up the free fruit. :-)

one day, if CouchDB works well for you, you'll have all the interest in having a reliable package source: you may decide in investing some time in building the know-how required to update it, and then you'll share the results with other people, that then in the future will do the same.

so, welcome in the open source bazaar: it's a delightful environment, and I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay :-).
